A Glimpse of Chinese EVs: the dominant power to drive the world into the future of transportation

I was in the NIO Power Day last week in Dishuihu, Shanghai. Very impressive tech show from NIO. Feel very amazed why I was on the NIO EC6's driver seat and finished the automated parking & automated battery swapping.
Nice! Recently I added an ES6 to my garage. I'm sure you know the new Shanghai policy, so the total spend is only RMB 538,400 (~PKR 14.7M), no tax required, free license plate, excellent value!

What does this trash brand has to do with Chinese EV thread?
I believe it's great move that Shanghai government invested heavily (loans, logistics backup, etc) to bring Tesla here, after all Musk is a pioneer/KOL in this business, and a charming marketer. He has taken so much heat from Detroit and UAW and still he stands firm today. Whether he is a South African, an US immigrant, or perhaps even a Martian doesn't change how Shanghai sees him this way. Like Musk has said Shanghai Tesla is "the best quality, lowest cost, and also low drama", it serves as a key export hub (to other overseas markets) as well as key driver of China's massive EV supply chain from batteries to every single parts possible. Domestically speaking the mid-priced EV sector (RMB 200~300,000) is expected to eclipse gasoline cars in a few years, Shanghai believes free market competition between Tesla products and other EV players is right way to grow this. Then there are brands competing in the sizable luxury sector (RMB 400~900,000) like NIO and HiPhi, and of course there is a budget sector (below RMB 200,000) though quite small in Shanghai.

I personally have test-drived a few brands and finally picked NIO ES6 recently.

Shanghai should have spent the money for poor migrants in Shanghai and delete Hukou to provide the BASIC needs for migrant workers, instead of subsidizing the scammer Musk.

Musk will have to pay back $2 billion to Asian investors for that Shanghai Gigafactory. Let's see what happens.

I believe Tesla is mostly vaporware being sold on the premise of a lifestyle to wear worshippers. It is not an economical car, high quality car, and the company has made multiple false promises.

$2 billion debt for a $1T company. I would say don't hold your breath.

Since when investing is at the expense of social welfare? They are run in parallel, where welfare comes from fiscal budget, and investment come from funds/banks, no? Despite they are as different as apple to pizza from a public management POV, I thought investment brings jobs to migrant workers, no?

And by denying the residency for migrant workers, Shanghai strengthens its middleman position. A win-win strategy.

Guess where are they residing every nights? Still within the city, or are they denied? People comes and goes, if they stay long enough (and comply with certain social welfare requirement) they become Shanghai citizen, similar policies in Beijing and others, no?

Do you even understand what residency means?

Care to explain?
It is called "HuKou" in Chinese. It means it is some place you can call it home. You are not some kind of wandering traveler who just happens to be in that place. You don't just come here to work and once the work is not available you have to haul your *** out of it. In the rest of the world, it is often called "permanent residency" in legal terms. China is probably the only country in the world that its citizens need to apply for that in order to move his home to a different city within the same country.

Kindly name me one case, just one, in which anyone's *** is hauled out of Shanghai (or Beijing or any city)?

You must be very young. When I was a kid, there was a well known place in Urumqi where many people without HuKou lived there. They were called "黑户“ (or Black Family) and they were subject to routine eviction from time to time. Nowadays, such a brutal practice is frown upon but it is not illegal. Even in Beijing, there was a infamous campaign to evicting so-called "low-end" population. Guess what? None of those "low-end" population has Beijing's HuKou.

In addition, for those not-so-low-end populations, like college graduates, without HuKou, their lives are effectively denied because many services provided by the government are denied to them, such as kindergartens and elementary schools. Although there are private offering in recent years, the latest trend has been to eliminate those as well or turn them into government-run services. Let's not get into the permission to buy homes. Without HuKou, it would very difficult for you to get a loan, which means for regular folks, having a place you own is often beyond reach. That is assuming you have a decent salary to afford one with mortgage.

So no one's *** get hauled out of Shanghai, right? That's what I suppose, cos people comes and goes every day, they may stay as long as they like without work, cos we are one country. If you choose to work here forever, sooner or later you become Shanghai citizen, just get in line, there's open & clear policy, NO denial.

Yes Shanghai is very expensive, is that anyone's fault? On contrary Kunming is cheap, should anyone take credit? Jakarta is the most expensive city in Indonesia, similarly New York, London, Tokyo, you wanna blame anyone? We are a free country where you freely choose where to work & live (just comply with policy), just do some maths prior to taking action for one's own sake. The high paid jobs in Shanghai are not reserved exclusively for Shanghai citizens/residents, neither are reserved exclusively for migrants, it's a level playing field for all players so compete if one dare.
