BERLIN: Germany says Pakistan has arrested a German wanted on terrorism charges at home. The Foreign Ministry said on Saturday that Pakistani authorities had confirmed they were holding a man from Frankfurt identified as Rami M.

A ministry spokesman did not comment on media reports saying Rami M. was wanted in Germany for membership in a terrorist group, nor on reports he was planning a terrorist attack on Germany’s embassy in Islamabad.

Der Spiegel magazine and Berliner Zeitung daily reported that Rami M. had phoned the embassy, asking for documents to leave Pakistan.

They reported the embassy asked him to come on June 21 but was warned he planned an attack.

The reports said Pakistani authorities arrested him before his embassy appointment. — AP

Officials: German militant detained in NW Pakistan

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan — A suspected German al-Qaida member wearing a woman's burqa was detained Monday after leaving Pakistan's militant heartland close to the Afghan border, security officials said.

The 27-year-old man is allegedly an expert in making suicide vests who crossed into Pakistan from neighboring Afghanistan a few months ago, said intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

The German was in a vehicle with a local man and his young daughter when he was picked up at a check post in Bannu district, which borders North Waziristan, said police officer Ghulam Farid.

He was traveling with a fake Pakistani passport, said the intelligence officials.

A burqa covers the entire body, including the face. It is worn by most women in northwestern Pakistan when they leave the house.

North Waziristan is a known sanctuary for al-Qaida and the Taliban and has long drawn foreign militants.

Western governments are concerned their nationals are traveling to the region to hook up with al-Qaida and plot or train for terrorist attacks at home.

Foreigners are not allowed to visit Bannu, Waziristan and parts of the Afghan border region without permission.

Farid said the man, who was not identified, was being questioned by security officials.

'No access' to detained German citizen in Pakistan, Berlin says

Berlin - Amid claims that Germany betrayed one of its own citizens to Pakistan intelligence, Berlin said Saturday that its diplomats in Pakistan had not obtained any access to Rami M, 25.

The news magazine Der Spiegel reported Saturday that relatives of of M, an Islamist of Syrian extraction who reportedly left Hamburg in March to visit militants on the Afghan border, insisted that M had been seeking German protection.

"We have no consular access to a person of this name," a Foreign Ministry spokesman said after Spiegel released its latest news report to other media.

Spiegel said Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), the Pakistan secret agency, was holding M and the family was concerned because of claims ISI had tortured previous prisoners. It asserted M was under "intense interrogation."

Earlier German media said German police counted M among 40 men from Germany who were eager to get out of the clutches of terrorist groups based in Pakistan's troubled Waziristan region.

Spiegel said he had phoned the German embassy in Pakistan and had an appointment there, but was arrested on June 21 before he arrived.

The magazine said allegations that German agencies tipped off Pakistan intelligence to thwart M's safe return to Germany would now be aired before a secret parliamentary committee supervising the German intelligence services.

It said staff of Chancellor Angela Merkel who directly oversee intelligence had been summoned to explain this Wednesday to the committee what happened and how the ISI knew M was travelling to the embassy.

Critics say embassy diplomats had assured M they would help get him out of Waziristan and sent him a safe-conduct.

The media have claimed that the anti-terrorism branch of the German federal police tipped off the ISI, or that the German foreign intelligence agency BND, which liaises with the ISI, was involved.
