Would the second shot have worked had it been an RPG 29? if I am correct the ammo rack is situated at the rear of the turret. Or he could have aimed at the place where the engine is.

Yes RPG-29 would penetrate the turret side. But possible that round did not hit the ammo rack but basket behind it.

The real story is quite different.


Its not RPG-29, but RPG-18 with 300-mm penetration. The RPG-29 is way longer:
