A Different Iraqi Abrams Story (Why The M1 Is a True Beast)

A post recently on this Sub-Forum titled "Iraqi Abrams loses to Grenades" attracted a lot of attention and Abrams as a result from a Hatch thrown Grenade was shown in flames (Note: There was no picture after that that show it actually destroyed, only in flames, you better be sure that ISIS propaganda machine would surely not neglect the view of a destroyed Abrams mind you), however there is another story of an Iraqi Abrams in the middle of a fight against ISIS members, a story that shows resilience, and in fact desperation on the part of the OPFOR, let's see this story shall we?

an Iraqi Abrams makes its way through a single lane highway, OPFOR insurgents have prepared an ambush in the area, all their weapons ready and pointing at it, the most important one being their cameras:

An OPFOR Insurgent fires an RPG-29 at the tank, with their usual mind numbing religious bravado chantings and a certain propaganda win in their minds close by:

The shot connects in the Tanks tower, these guys know where to aim, and clearly have a very good training, however something happened that they did not foresee:

It didn't make a dent on the Abrams, they only angered it, now what they have to contend with is a 120mm of smoothbore canon staring directly at their faces.

Seeing the failure of the first attack, ambushers from the other side fire their own RPG-29s at the Abrams, hitting the tower as well, this surely got it, no way this American rust will survive this one but despite the hope of many, the Abrams is a true Tank and not a moving coffin for soldiers *wink wink Syrian T-72s*.

So they fired another

But this heap of American metal is not the Russian junk they are used to fighting back in Syria, no in fact, this is not a Tank that is desgined to be produced in large numbers to flood an invaded country, this is a Tank meant to fight, get hit and get hit again and still keep the lives of the soldiers inside of it and keep on fighting.

Alas however, no matter how good your machine is, without good command and training, even the best of machines will falter, sending an armor into an infantry fighting zone without support is asking to lose, and this is how our story of one of the best fighting machines end.

Not by killing of the Tank, it simply refuses to die, so you have to go for the men inside, a grenade lopped inside the tank proves to be the only effective way to stop this beast of a machine, and its only fault is that those who operate it, didn't know how to use it to its full potential.

Only an INSANE person would doubt the capabilities of Abrams. Those Tanks are marvels of modern engineering, 2nd only to Leopard2A7s though :p:

Egyptian land forces have 1000+ M1A1s....

No wonder they are oppressing poor Egyptians with iron fist

Some points to be stressed here.

1. MBT's are supposed to be invunerable to most of RPG's ( RPG-29 has some chance to do damage; but RPG-7, the usual stuff terrorists world over use could not even scratch surface of an MBT).

Challanger-2 ate 70 RPG's in one sitting and the crew still survived without a scratch. M1A1/2 surviving 2-3 RPG's is not a big deal. It is supposed to do that.

2. Iraqi M1A1/2's were destroyed due to incompetence of men, not machine. If you drive around a battlefield with open hatches, your Tank could be destroyed even with a dynamite stick.

3.Your Jibe about T-72 is misplaced and borne out of propganda. Tank Technology is the niche in which Europeans and Russians are either equal or better than US. Main gun of Abrahm's is a copy of German's Rhinemettal gun. And analysis done by expert on Warsaw Pact ,after Cold was was over, revealed that Russian/Ukranian Heavy ERA ( Konkat ) was inpenetrable to any Anti tank round fielded by NATO one first hit, and to penetrate on second hit, Tanker has to aim for same spot which he has hit before.

Iraqi T-72's were toast for many reasons. First, they were of inferior export version to a country under sanctions due to Iran-Iraq war, not one fielded by Warsaw pact; Second, Iraqi T-72 did not have any ERA to protect them from APFSDS; Third, they did not have Night vision equipmets; Fourth; They fielded steel APFSDS which could not penetrate Western Armour, rather than standard Tungsten or DU rods.

A massed Armoured battle would have been won by NATO after 1980's, but not because of tanks, but because of Air superiority and CAS provided by A-10's.

Egyptian land forces have 1000+ M1A1s....

No wonder they are oppressing poor Egyptians with iron fist

MBT's have no role in policing, except as an intimidating device. A Humvee has more utility, for pacifying crowds.

said for the loss of life of the soldiers…..the training of the iraqi arm is pathetic….who ever was in charge of training them should be held responsible

I didn't foresee that the downgraded export variants of the Abrams can be THAT formidable.

Iraq's Abadi presses on with top brass shake-up - Yahoo News

Baghdad (AFP) - Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi has retired a general in charge of the central region where hundreds of army recruits were captured and executed by jihadists in June, a spokesman said Thursday.

"The commander-in-chief of the armed forces (Abadi) has retired Lieutenant-General Ali Fraiji and replaced him with Abdel Wahab Zabun," defence ministry spokesman Mohammed al-Askari said in a statement.

State television announced that General Abboud Qanbar, the defense ministry's acting secretary-general, and General Ali Ghaidan, the former ground commander of the armed forces, had been put on pension.

Do you think it is merely a coincidence that the training was pathetic? Training done by one of the most well trained military on earth?

This domino was designed to fall.

Point was: it isn't open! > bs handgrenade story (though you migh achieve a mobility kill if you succeed in damaging the engine)

There's nothing indicating this tank actually died.

A Grad would have that turret blown right off pronto. Never mess with Russians.

The real story is quite different.

Its not RPG-29, but RPG-18 with 300-mm penetration. The RPG-29 is way longer:

It was not the best aim, since the turret front is the most protected place of any tank.

Would the second shot have worked had it been an RPG 29? if I am correct the ammo rack is situated at the rear of the turret. Or he could have aimed at the place where the engine is.
