90 govt officials, 29 politicians involved in Iranian oil smuggling: report

So would you rather Pakistan pays much more for oil with its precious forex just to collect some taxes on it, or would you rather Pakistan get dirt cheap Iranian oil which it doesn’t have to waste forex on but can’t tax? Which offers more benefits?

The 2023 price for oil for Iranians in Iran is:

“Another oil-rich country- clearly, there is a trend. Logically, the countries with the most oil reserves pay the least. The Iranians, with huge oil reserves of their own, charge $0.20 per gallon.”

Source:

International oil prices are at around $82+. A barrel has around 42 gallons in it. The price per barrel for Iranian smuggled oil is far cheaper than international imported oil. The costs per barrel for Iranian smuggled oil alone is cheaper than the tax on imported international oil the government charges.
You still pay forex anyway.
Smuggling money is black money
Most of it end up in Dubai

We could simply do barter trade with Iran but ..

Pay through tax as black money you saved via forex goes overseas..those smugglers don't make Pakistani assets

Maybe this is Paks way of busting US sanctions in regards to Irani oil

This just shows how the undocumented economy could be huge.

Its well known Military Inc has been making huge sum of money through oil smuggling business. Quetta is one of the most lucrative posts. Getting a post on the Iranian Pakistan border is a lottery.

Now for people who think smuggling cheap oil into Pakistan is a good thing. Not sure whether to laugh or cry at the comment.

Let me lay it out in layman’s term. Smuggling cheap oil means

1. loss of revenue to the state

2. facilitating black money. In this case to the military inc through which they continue their haramkhori

3. Facilitate mafias who channel their funds into more illegal businesses.

4. FATF related restrictions on Pakistan

5. Optically shows Pakistan as a banana republic. (As if we aren’t already)

6. Not enough revenue to the state to be channeled to Balochistan which it badly needs. Sows discord amongst the public.

7. Pakistan’s based refinery importing at standard rates. What kind of message smuggling gives these kind of enterprises? That they shouldn’t go the legal way and use smuggled oil.

8. Discourages potential foreign investors in oil related industries to invest in Pakistan. The military inc has done enough damage in terms of monopolizing certain sectors.

It is not new news ,it was happening for the past 50 years ,recent examples were HASCOL

If they’re buying Iranian oil for Rs. 17 and selling for Rs. 294 per liter, who’s making the profit? It’s not the people and the government is not collecting any taxes.

All the profits are going into the pockets of the generals.

According the Adil Raja the most lucrative postings for army officers are Karachi and Quetta. That’s where they have the biggest scams going.

Pakistan can’t import Iranian oil for 2 reasons.

#1. US sanctions.
#2. International oil prices. Why buy Iranian oil when Iran charges you international oil rates.

I say smuggle more. Boys are circumventing both problems. They are buying oil at local Iranian rate for dirt cheap prices and Uncle Sam is not triggered.

Ganda Hai Par Dhandha Hai.
That is it, but there are issues to this.

1. There are risk of contaminants, so someone needs to process them.
2. It kills the job market for local industries in Balochistan, why work for 1$ a day when you can make 10$ from just smuggling.
3. How will local industries compete against Iranian goods without price improvement.
4. We are losing alot of taxes here and i mean alot alongside an unregulated economy.

there is no loss of revenue in taxes. whatever tax people are paying are of no benifit to our state or its people anyway. even recorde taxes collected by imram khan were not enough.

Instead of paying $20 for smuggled oil, you want to pay $100 on international market so that you collect $20 taxes in rupees on it. ?!

Pakistan buys $10 to $15 billions worth of oil and gas. What do you expect Pakistan to export in return (barter with)? Pakistan don’t produce anything of value, right now even food items are imported into Pakistan.

IMF and world Bank both are controlled by US. So for economically weak country like Pakistan, that is more than enough.
It seems pretty obvious to me that if pakistan was willing to buy russian oil [despite the obvious political displeasure of its american overlord] and pay for it in russian rubles [or yuan or dirhams],then why not simply buy cheaper iranian oil [or any other petroleum products] and pay for them in iranian rials [or yuan or dirhams or even......rubles?]

Theres a very old,very true,saying:
"Where there is a will there`s a way"
What this means is that if the political will is there then all things are possible. However if that political will is absent, then it doesnt matter how many other factors may be in somethings favor, nothing will get done.
The indefinitely suspended iran-pakistan pipeline I think was/is an excellent example of a lack of political will.

Finally someone understands!
Additional benefits is it employs unemployed Baloch and saves forex. If it’s under the watchful eyes of the boys then they can ensure terrorists don’t take advantage of it and can use this to keep Baloch pro pak cuz the interests of these smugglers with be tied with our interests. If also improves our soft power and leverage over Iranian Baloch especially in the border areas because their livelihood is tied to us.
The only people this harms is Iranian government. As long as the smuggling isn’t conducted by terrorists, it’s benefiting Pakistan more than any harm it brings.

By this logic, why stop at Oil? Lets open borders with india and china as well and allow uninterrupted flow of all goods at the cost of our own taxes and industry?

This is plain and simple corruption at the border. Anyone and everyone who knows knows why this is allowed. Why these positions are so covetted and how people get filthy rich.
