80% Indian-Americans to vote for Obama: Poll

WASHINGTON: Indian-Americans would overwhelmingly vote for US President Barack Obama in the November presidential elections, while Mitt Romney has been named as favourite among the Republican presidential candidates, according to a latest opinion poll.

"Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney leads his nearest rivals Ron Paul by 24.1 percentage points and former Senator Rick Santorum by 33.4 percentage points," said the latest national opinion poll among Indian-Americans.

"But if the presidential elections were held today, an overwhelming 80 per cent of Asian Indians would vote for President Barack Obama," said the first of its kind survey among Indian-Americans conducted by Boston-based INE Media Inc., the publisher of IndUS Business Journal and INDIA New England newspaper.

The online survey was conducted on February 22-26 with respondents coming from across the country.

"This is the first survey of Asian Indians during this presidential election season," said Upendra Mishra, publisher of IndUS Business Journal and INDIA New England.

"Indians have been primarily known in the United States for their entrepreneurial skills with excellence in the academic, scientific and technology fields, but now they're making their mark on both the local and national political scenes," Mishra said.

In the survey, Romney got the maximum support among the Republican candidates from the participants with 51.9 per cent.

However, Obama got the commanding lead with 80 per cent when pitted against the Republican candidates with Romney securing 14.7 per cent support from the participants.

What has he done for development for their community or improving ties with india ???

Obama has probably been one of the most poor US presidents of all time, but he managed to redeem his image a bit by bringing back (most of) the troops from Iraq, & improving the economy in the last 2-3 months, as well as killing OBL in May. But even then, Obama has probably been one of the most poor US presidents of all time, but he's lucky that the American people have a bit of a short memory. And with Santorum, Romney & Newt being so ridiculously bad that they are probably even worse than Obama, I think Obama might be the lesser of the evils.

Bit surprised with that 80% figure.. & hence i doubt the credibility of this poll considering Obama's record... unless these Indo - american's support is based purely on domestic issues of America. Let's be honest... Obama's record wrt India before he became president or after isn't that great. He was a strong supporter of NPT, failure to stop NSG's decision to strengthen its guidelines which could undermine india's civil nuclear deal, he always had a thing about this job out-sourcing to India etc.. Then again..it's their country.. their president... & their politics...

Most of the troops from Iraq ? Aren't all the troops out of Iraq ?

Obama is saintly compared to the other presidential hopefulls. He is trying to undo the mess created by the pothead who held power before him. As long as he does not tries to make a mess in the middle east, he should do fine

Thats the crappy part with US/UK politics. Only two real parties to vote for, and if both put up bad contenders then whats the point in voting? Obama is as you said one of poorest US presidents in recent history, but one can only imagine how worse US foreign policy would be with the likes of Gingrich or Santorum in charge.

indians celebrate each time that there is a drone strike in Pakistan so I am not surprised. Obama has killed more Pakistanis than any U.S. President in history.

You must be kidding. More people have died from American actions during Obama's administration than Bush's administration.

Bush is saintly compared to Obama. Even the Republican candidates, except Newt Gingrich, are not as bad as Obama.
