What's new

67 pilots found tipsy in last three years; most from Jet Airways

cant they just wait till after their flights??? what is wrong with these people? So many lives are dependant on their judgement and actions (and are at stake)

even last year, there was incident not far from Pakistani air space when indian pilots and crew were under the influence and began engaging in verbal and physical violence.

Happens all over the world. Nothing to do with Indian pilots.

oh no, not you again.... didnt you get banned? So by default there would be silence at your end.

well anywayz, welcome back Ticky-ticky tock. :enjoy:

the whole report is on indian pilots...what do you mean ''nothing to do with indian pilots''

you could re-word it to say, this hasnt just been done by indian pilots....but does that make it okay? And more relevantly, doesnt this frequency annoy you?

I wonder if you know how the tests are carried out.

and how strict it is the level.

Surely doesn't. But the number is higher in India, because there is more frequent checking.

And from now on there is mandatory alcohol test before every flight, so at least its taken care of in India. And the limit is one quarter of what it is for safe driving. Pilots probably don't even realize that they are over the limit.

You are right. We Indians just dont know when and where to enjoy a drink. Drinking and driving also is a common thing here

I'm not privvy to the details

there are 2 methods that come to mind:

a.) breathalyzer

b.) blood test

if they used option A -- then determining that they were ''tipsy'' doesnt even give the whole picture. they may have been even more intoxicated earlier but had time to sober up.

and when you are about to ferry passengers in a giant flying bus, i personally think that any proper, professional pilot would want to keep his/her mind fresh. Getting hammered beforehand is an idiotic 'policy' to use

there are times when one must be serious , and then times for fun and enjoyment

as for drink driving --takes place all over the world. I've seen it done in Pakistan many times too (no laws exist against it). Impaired drivers always cause accidents and maim people.

stupidity.

You are right that one should not drink before flying other people.

To ensure this, they are not supposed to drink 12 hours before the flight. That is the time the alcohol effect is expected to have vanished.

However, some people have different absorption rates.

Ethyl alcohol taken in via ingestion passes from the mouth down the esophagus and into the stomach and on into the small intestine. At each point along the way ethyl alcohol can be absorbed into the blood stream. However, the majority of the ethyl alcohol is absorbed from the stomach (approx. 20%) and the small intestine (approx. 80%). In general drinking more alcohol within a certain period of time will result in increased blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) due to more ethyl alcohol being available to be absorbed into the blood. However there are a number of factors that can influence ethyl alcohol absorption from the gastrointestinal tract.

Gastric emptying seems to be the most important determinant of the rate of absorption of ethyl alcohol taken in orally. In general the faster the gastric emptying, the more rapid absorption. Therefore, factors, which influence gastric emptying, influence absorption. One of the most important factors is the presence of food. Food delays gastric emptying and therefore delays absorption of ethyl alcohol . Interestingly, the type of food, whether fat, carbohydrate, or protein, does not seem to be a factor in the absorption of ethyl alcohol. Physiological factors such as strenuous physical exercise also delay gastric emptying, thus decrease ethyl alcohol absorption. Additional factors such as drugs (e.g. nicotine, marijuana, and ginseng), that modify physiological factors regulating gastric emptying also modify ethyl alcohol absorption in a predicted manner.
