Recent first flight of Mitsubishi ATD-X (Shinshin) by Japan has made it the fourth nation in the world to fly a manned stealth jet after United States, Russia and China and pushed them into Elite Club of Countries who have successfully demonstrated possession of Capabilities for developing cutting edge technology for developing 5th Generation fighter aircraft.

Race to develop 5th Generation fighter jet in Asia among many countries is heating up with many nations in the region currently on the fence are all set to start their own developments soon , let’s look into this upcoming development .

KAI KF-X ( South Korea / Indonesia )

KF-X is a South Korean programme to develop an advanced multirole fighter for the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) and Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) spearheaded by South Korea with Indonesia as the primary partner. South Korean has also roped in Lockheed Martin has one of its Industrial partners which will offload some of the technology developed for F-35 fighter jet program which will also be purchased by South Korea .

TAI TFX / F-X (Turkey)

TFX is a Fifth-generation jet fighter being developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) with technological assistance partnership with BAE Systems of the United Kingdom. According to Chief engineer on the TFX program aircraft will feature a design optimized for low radar cross-sectional density, internal weapons bays, and the ability to supercruise and other features associated with fifth-generation fighter jets and will use a derivative of the EJ200 engines to power them . Indian Defense Analyst will be watching this program very closely since Turkey-Pakistan have very good Military relationships and Pakistan will get access to their program which can eventually lead to export of this jets to arch rivals Pakistan .

Chengdu J-20 (China)

Chengdu J-20 is first Chinese 5th Generation fighter jet manufactured by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group (CAIG) which is now very close to entering production . Multiple pre-series productions aircraft have joined test flight program lately which has seen many design tweaks from its first aircraft flight in 2011 . According to Chinese media, Plane will enter Operational service by 2017 and full first Squadron by 2019 .

Shenyang J-31 (China)

Shenyang J-31 is second Chinese 5th Generation fighter jet manufactured by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation to tap huge International Export potential and the project is largely has been funded Internally by the Company with little chances of entering official operational service with People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF).

VTOL J-31 (China)

Media rumors have indicated that China wants to develop its own vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) fighters with similar performance of F-35B. China has reportedly roped in Russia to develop new engines for new VTOL aircraft since Russians previously worked on Yak-141 VTOL aircraft and certainly have some experience. New VTOL aircraft might be based on J-31 aircraft but Experts are divided and are speculating that China might use completely new design .

India will be working on Two 5th Generation fighter jet to cater to its demands lets look into India’s development.

HAL Sukhoi PMF/FGFA (India & Russia)

India and Russia have an agreement to design new FGFA 5th generation fighter aircraft based on Russian Sukhoi T-50 Pak-Fa fighter jet . But Work on the project is yet to begin due to the serious difference in the project .

Indian Air Force has demanded 45 Technical changes to the new aircraft and also raised doubts on performance of AL-41 engines used in Pak-Fa and Stealth character of the aircraft , Russia to have not kept their end of the bargain and have refused Indian officials access to the aircraft and also denied India’s request to let its Test Pilots to gauge performance of the fighter jets before it comes to a conclusion . It is unlikely agreement will be signed soon and further negotiations will be held in near future .

HAL AMCA (India)

Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is a single-seat, twin-engine fifth-generation stealth multirole fighter being developed by India. The project is likely to go official by the end of 2016 with funds released by the government which is currently waiting for clearance from PMO.

India is also having talks with the United States to co-develop GE F414 based jet engines for the aircraft and French Dassault will share some of the technology of its Rafale fighter jets to met its offset requirements . the project might also see Swedish Saab Company roped in to develop next generation Avionics for the jet.

Conclusion

In Asia it seems India is seriously lacking behind many countries who have already reached Technological demonstrator Stage while India is yet to freeze its final designs of its AMCA or Begin working Jointly with Russians on the development of FGFA . With Many Asian Countries keen also to acquire American F-35 5th Generation fighter jets soon , India risks falling behind in Asia .

why dont merge them ...... you will have russian maneuverability and american technology ...... an abomination probably better than both

I doubt Russia would like the Americans involved in their 5 generation project and vice versa... these projects will incorporate the latest cutting edge technology and are heavily guarded secrets.... both are arch rivals and would stop at nothing to disrupt each others advantages over one another...

imagine the look on NATO's face if this was a reality... :pissed:

i dnt understand only usa has make F-22 and F-35 with 5 Gen. Engine no other country able to develop. china using russian engine.
then how can they develop VTOL without a good engine.

Haha, "where is India"? India is in the prime postion in Asia, that's where it is. The FGFA will be, by far, the most credible F-22 rivial the world has, let alone Asia. Russia is the only nation on the planet with the technical knowledge in VLO and engine tech that rivals the US and India will be able to leverage this build on it (like with the MKI) by adding the best systems and electronics from the West (and India) for the FGFA.

The AMCA is another matter but it has the potential to be a beast in its own right a few decades down the line.

As for the TFX for Pakistan? It could happen but there is no reason to suspect that Turkey's first ever home grown fighter and a VLO project no less will be anything like a walk in the park or delivered anytime soon. Pakistan is more likely to get the J-31.

Exactly, Only US has done it...with its own nuts and bolts. Russia has also done it minus stealth/not satisfactory features according to Russian media /Indian media/international media. Rest are all using assembled and testing.

Meanwhile the taliban are building an 11th gen jet, runs on pure fanaticism, hash and opium. One single hardpoint for a suicide vest.

I never liked this way of describing aircraft. The whole generation thing is really ambiguous, especially when talking about latest and future jets.

I fear those terrorists combine suicide vest with a jet pack.

Or may be the strategic placement of suicide pack in between their legs might translate that into a jetpack & guided missile in one go ;)

Coming to the topic, India is exactly where it needs to be. R&D on one side and loads of cash on other to buy which ever becomes available.
