SIVAKASI(TN): At least 52 persons were burned to death and 50 injured today in a devastating blaze that raged through a fireworks factory on the outskirts of Sivakasi, the country's cracker manufacturing hub. The toll might go up as several persons were still feared trapped under the debris, police and fire brigade said, as the fire was doused by the evening amid intermittent explosions.

Officials said the dead bodies had been accounted for from hospitals at Sattur (16), Virudhunagar (13), Sivakasi (21). Two others died on way to a hospital in Madurai. Almost all those killed were workers, with some persons, who rushed inside the factory complex to try and rescue those trapped inside, also falling victim to the blaze, they said. The tragedy struck when workers were engaged in mixing chemicals for fancy fireworks. The blaze gutted all 48 sheds located in the premises of Omshakthi fireworks factory, police and fire officials said.

They said the entire production had been stored in a godown against official advice. The sheds were reduced to ashes in the sprawling complex of the company and the debris had to be cleared to get a clear picture of the actual number of casualties, an official said. Fire officials said that due to a variety of chemicals used in pyrotechnics crackers, there was thick and suffocating smoke, making their task difficult to enter the factory. The smoke could be seen 1.5 km away from the spot.
"These are times ahead of Deepavali. So activities go on at breakneck speed in the cracker units," Virudhunagar District Superintendent of Police Najmul Hoda said. A factory official said 300 persons were at work at the unit at the time of the incident. Thousands of people thronged the area near the factory to inquire about the fate of their relatives working in the unit. In October 2009, 32 people, most of them Deepavali shoppers, were killed at a cracker godown fire in Pallipattu in Tiruvallur district.

Officials said all the victims who perished in the fire had suffered more than 80 per cent burns. The task was now to protect sheds where crackers had been stored in nearby areas, they said. An angry mob in the area tried to enter the factory premises but were prevented by the police who sealed the area. Senior minister O Panneerselvam and four other colleagues have rushed to the spot to oversee relief operations. Officials attributed the delay in dousing fire to the lack of enough equipment for fire fighters, including mask.

Tragic, horrible way to go. Safety standards need to be massively improved in India, this culture of complaceny is just not good enough.

Indeed really sad.
This is really shameful for us. Safe and healthy working environment is a fundamental human right.

Even after so many accidents and hundreds of deaths caused by fire at workplace, none of the government is doing any shite to implement fire safety regulations.

I can say more than 95% of our Industries don’t even have a fire safety plan. And more than 99 % of employees are unaware of emergency response or evacuation plan. They don’t even know how to operate a fire extinguisher.

I am damn sure they are at least 100 regulations or rules the Sivakasi factory was flouting. But what’s going to happen? A enquiry, a report and some more deaths after a month or few.

Even in many of the largest industries, there are no safety audits conducted.

A factory employing 500 or more workers should employ a Welfare Officer.
A factory employing 1,000 or more workers is required to appoint one or more Safety Officers.
The employer must set up a Safety Committee consisting of equal number of representatives of workers and management.
The employer must provide workers with information relating to health and safety at work. The worker has the right to be sponsored by the employer for health and safety training at a training centre or institute.
The employer must appoint competent persons to supervise the hazardous activities within the factory.
The employer must produce a site emergency plan and also disaster control measures for the factory.
The employer shall take necessary measures to prevent outbreak and spread of fire.
The employer shall provide and maintain safe means of escape for all workers in the event of fire.
Workers must receive training in what they should do if there is a fire emergency and some workers must be trained in first aid.

Tell me how many of the workplaces fulfill these regulations?
Who is going to enforce it on those killing chambers?
Hold the district administration, labour officer of the city and state responsible for any fire accident. Book them for culpable homiside.

A safety officer should be made compulsory for every district with more than 50 industries.

This is terrible!

WTF was the factory management doing?

As usual, most of our policies are good on paper but never applied realistically.

.
All this so that some corrupt politician could fire 2 more rockets in his daughter's weddings !!

.
Factory did not follow fire safety norms.....as usual....anywhere in India
Dont be an idiot , this is not the place to criticize a country . Atleast in India diwali crackers blast , not human bombs and terrorist bombs . You know what i mean .:flame:
Ontopic :
They must have not stored crackers beyond the limit .

. .
Most of them killed were Bystanders not workers, who came see the cracker fire

. . . .
RIP.. Sad incident happened in my state :(
Sivakasi is the hub of crackers and printing press... Every year there is some accidents in sivakasi...
Corrupt and poor bureaucracy...
However the liscence of the factory was revoked just 1 day before the tragedy...

. .
Every year Sivkashi has some type of accidents..yet there is no action.
