NEW DELHI, Apr 19: India now has 100 million more people living below the poverty line than in 2004, according to official estimates released on Sunday, reports Reuters.

The poverty rate has risen to 37.2 percent of the population from 27.5 percent in 2004, a change that will require the Congress-ruled government to spend more money on the poor.

The new estimate comes weeks after Sonia Gandhi, head of the Congress party, asked the government to revise a Food Security Bill to include more women, children and destitute.

"The Planning Commission has accepted the report on poverty figures," Abhijit Sen, a member of the Planning Commission told Reuters, referring to the new poverty estimate report submitted by a government panel last December.

India now has 410 million people living below the UN estimated poverty line of $1.25 a day, 100 million more than was estimated earlier, officials said.

India calculates how much of its population is living below the poverty line by checking whether families can afford one square meal a day that meets minimum nutrition needs.

It was not immediately clear how much more the federal government would have to spend on the poor, as that would depend on the Food Security Bill when it is presented to the government after the necessary changes, officials say.

India''s Planning Commission will meet the food and expenditure secretaries next week to estimate the cost aspects of the bill, government officials said.

A third of the world's poor are believed to be in India, living on less than $2 per day, worse than in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa, experts say.

The government spends only 1 percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on healthcare facilities, forcing millions to struggle to get medicines, Oxfam and 62 other agencies said in a report called: "Your Money or Your Life" last year.

While India''s economy is slowly recovering from a global recession with a GDP growth of 7.2 percent, millions of poor in rural India are finding it difficult to cope with around 17 percent food price inflation.

For some member here talking about poverty in India is never ending subject, it gives them sense of satisfaction it seems.

Highlighting in red indicates the intentions of the member.

I have seen webbie warning members not to start thread on poverty but people still do it and not seen any reaction from management.

don't worry we will upgrade them, all know that u have successfully removed ur poverty, then why don't u help us:chilli:

lol!!! its just like saying...khanne ko ek muthi dal nahi aur chale hain saur ko dawat deene!! every year after floods India donates tons of food to Bangladeshi and in return these people who survive floods come on net and write this ****!

This is the reason the data is skewed. $1.25 per day in India can provide a lot more than in other countries. Purchasing power parity or PPP hasn't been factored in while releasing these statistics.

410 Million. WOW !!!

Thats more than Pakistan's, Bangladesh's, and Afghanistan's TOTAL Populations (wealthy, middle class, and poor) ALL COMBINED !!!!

As for those Indians who are angry at the person who posted this news, its from an Indian news source and from April 2010.

^^^^with indian population it will be always more than our small neighbours

I'm saying that when you combine the TOTAL Populations of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan (all citizens of these countries rich, middle class, and poor) its even less than the number of Indians living below the poverty line.

Pakistan - Total population 170 million
Bangladesh - Total population 163 million
Afghanistan - Total population 29 million

Total: 362 million

Population of Indians living below the poverty line: 410 million

And still so many indians believe they will become superpower :cheesy:

Just to make sure, that the number 410 million also includes illegal immigrants, right? :pop:

I dont think so. Illegal immigrants are not counted in any estimates concerning population of a country.

Pakistan has about 5 million illegal Afghan immigrants and they are not counted anywhere concerning Pakistan's population.

And I doubt india has 410 million illegal immigrants

That is one way of looking at it. There is another way of looking at it. If we consider population of India is 1200 mill in 2010 then 790 mill are NOT living below poverty line.

That is more than twice the combined population of Pak, Bang and Af.

^^^^ i was just gonna post tat

u spoiled my party

At it boy. That is the positive way of looking at things. At least a lot more than 50% of Indians are above the poverty line.:yahoo::yahoo: :yahoo:
