It's mindblowing to think that barely 40 years ago Shenzhen was just a sleepy fishing village

I don't think it was that bad. Video of people eating I think in the new Guomao (spinning?) restaurant (built in 1985) and looking out the window

Plus it was known for its "red light" stuff.

That could be possible but Sanyo opened a factory in Shenzhen in 1983 and I doubt they would do it without adequate support infrastructure like what your 1985 pic implies.

Sheznzhen became the specially economic zone in 1979, and then money was poured in by the government, after 4 years development, in 1983 I guess there must have been some infras established.

A small fishing village in 1980, now Shenzhen's GDP can rank 25th global if taken as a country, ahead of Austria, Israel, Ireland, Norway, AUE, Denmark, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh, South Africa, Finland, czech republic, Romania, New zealand.....
