Located 60 km north of Lijiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge is a canyon on the Yangtze River. Around 15 km in length, the gorge passes between Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yùlóngxuĕ Shān) (5,596 m) and Haba Xueshan (Hābā Shān) (5,396 m) through a series of rapids surrounded by steep 2000 metre cliffs.

Legend says that in order to escape from a hunter, a tiger jumped across the river at it's narrowest point (25 metres), subsequently providing the inspiration for the name.

The Gorge is a contender for the world's deepest river canyon - depending on the criteria applied.

The inhabitants of the gorge are primarily the indigenous Naxi people, who live in a handful of small hamlets. Their primary subsistence comes from grain production and foreign hikers. The gorge is not considered navigable.

Hiking the length of the gorge is possible. A challenge for most, but well worth it. While sometimes narrow, the hiking path - the high road - is well-maintained and marked. At approximately 22 kilometres (14 mi) in length, the trail is longer than the lower road, but is more varied, and offers fantastic scenery — mainly mountain views. It features a surprising variety of microecosystems, waterfalls and a fair number of guesthouses for trekkers.

The guesthouses are not well heated, which combined with the unpredictable nature of high mountain weather, make this trek unadvisable during the rainy season.

Tiger Leaping Gorge (simplified Chinese: 虎跳峡; traditional Chinese: 虎跳峽; pinyin: Hǔtiào Xiá) is a scenic canyon on the Jinsha River (Golden Sands River; 金沙江; Jīnshā Jiāng), a primary tributary of the upper Yangtze River. It is located 60 kilometres (37 mi) north of Lijiang City, Yunnan in southwestern China. It is part of the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas World Heritage Site.

Tiger Leaping Gorge is a contender for the world's deepest river canyon, depending on the exact definition used.[citation needed] The inhabitants of the gorge are primarily the indigenous Naxi people, who live in a handful of small hamlets. Their primary subsistence comes from grain production and foreign hikers (as well as Chinese).

You will never sense the true peacefulness until you visit the bamboo forest in south Sichuan. Located between Changning County and Jiang'an County of Yibin, the bamboo forest is a good place to visit and relax. In the depths of the forest, a clear lake reflects the surrounding bamboo, turning the water much greener. The fish swimming in the lake, startle a flock of widgeons. You can enjoy the peace and quietness while enjoying the harmonious environment. [Photo: Xinhuanet]

Shaanxi: Xi'an Huashan (陕西 西安 华山)

mt-huashan4.jpg

Huashan (Hua means brilliant, Chinese, or flowery; shan means mountain) is one of the five sacred Taoist mountains in China. Huashan boasts a lot of religious sites: Taoist temples, pavilions, and engraved scriptures are scattered over the mountain.

Hua Mountain is well-known for its sheer cliffs and plunging ravines. It is known as “the most precipitous mountain under heaven” and is probably the most dangerous mountain in the world frequented by hikers.

Hua Mountain is located 120 kilometers east of Xi'an, about 3 hours from the city centre. There are five peaks that make up the mountain: Cloud Terrace Peak (North Peak, 1613m), Jade Maiden Peak (Middle Peak, 2042m), Sunrise Peak (East Peak, 2100m), Lotus Peak (West Peak, 2038m) and Landing Wild Goose Peak (South Peak, 2160m). North Peak, the lowest of the five, is the starting point. It has three ways up it: the six kilometer winding track from Huashan village, the cable car or the path beneath it.
