4 Pak Intelligence Operatives Among 9 Killed: Reports

Four intelligence operatives and five militants were killed when Pakistani security personnel clashed with armed militants of the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi group in Punjab province today, media reports said.

Lashkar-e-Jhangvi leader Doctor Arshad alias Mufti was among the militants killed in the clashes in Chakwal district, located about 90-km from Islamabad, the reports said.

The clashes erupted after security forces backed by helicopters launched an operation to flush out militants in a mountainous area.

The operation continued till the evening as officials believed Arshad's accomplices were hiding in the region.

Troops conducted a house-to-house search to apprehend fleeing militants and their facilitators. Footage on television showed helicopters and security personnel participating in the operation.

There was no official word on the operation and the clashes.

Four intelligence officials, including an army major, were killed when militants fired at a raiding party, Express News channel reported.

Dawn News reported that the four intelligence officials had been kidnapped by militants and the operation was launched to free them.

However, the militants shot them dead after the operation was launched, it reported.

Aaj news channel reported that police had arrested 13 militants.

No. 3 may be likely, as we will usually never hear about the successful intelligence operations in the media unless the police or other civilian agencies are involved. It's usually when things go bad that the media gets wind of it.

JHELUM: At least four intelligence officials were killed in a covert raid on a militant hideout in the garrison city of Jhelum on Saturday, officials and sources said.

The incident took place in the hilly area near Pind Dadan Khan, which is located on the confluence of the border between Jhelum and Chakwal districts.

Sources told The Express Tribune that army troops mounted a secret undercover operation after they were tipped off about the presence of suspected terrorists in the Pir Chunbbal shrine on a hilltop.

It was a Military Intelligence-led operation in which four officials were killed, military sources said, identifying three of them as Major Afaq, Hawaldar Nazir Abbas and Naik Fiyyaz. They belonged to MI Punjab 204 Rawalpindi detachment of Jhelum and Chakwal.
One of their civil informants was also killed in the incident. Sources said that four terrorists were also killed in the raid. But it wasn’t confirmed officially.

Foreign media gave a different account. Quoting security officials, the BBC reported that the four intelligence officials were kidnapped by terrorists a few days back. And the kidnappers were demanding the release of their 20 comrades who were arrested during operations in the tribal regions.

Sources said that the MI had kept the undercover operation secret and not even the police were taken into confidence. But the BBC report said that the action was conducted in coordination with the police.

Sources said that police had alerted the militants about an earlier swoop, indicating that extremist groups have infiltrated the police force. Following that incident, the Punjab police chief had suspended a senior police official.

A group of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, led by Dr Arshad, had set up hideouts in the hilly areas near Khewra and Pir Chunbbal regions. These heavily armed militants had started kidnapping affluent people for ransom. Dr Arshad is wanted by the police in at least 10 cases of terrorism. Interior Minister Rehman Malik told the BBC that action was taken because militants have set up hideouts in these areas. He did not give details.

Sources said that MI officials mounted the undercover raid impersonating devotees at the Pir Chambal shrine. However, the suspicious militants searched them and found army identity cards. The militants killed the intelligence officials and fled the area unchallenged, according to sources.

Following the killing, Army helicopters launched a search operation. The army has thrown a security cordon around the area and, according to sources, a major search operation is expected today (Sunday). However, sources said that the militants were seen escaping from the area using the Rawalpindi-Lahore Motorway.

CHAKWAL: Terrorists on Saturday killed five military officials, including a major of the Pakistan Army.

According to details, a member of a defunct Jihadi outfit kidnapped a serving major of the Pakistan Army from an area of Mandi Bahauddin and took him to a den of terrorists located in the Salt Range in Pir Chambal area in the jurisdiction of Choa Saidan Shah police station in district Chakwal.

After getting reports of the kidnapping, four intelligence officials began the search for the officer but the terrorists came to know of their presence in the area and they gunned them down. Later, they also killed the abducted officer.

A search operation was conducted in which helicopters were also used. After hectic efforts of eight hours, the bodies of five army men were traced and shifted to Rawalpindi.

The electronic media telecast the news of the killing of five terrorists while the police tried to give an impression that a police encounter was held against the terrorists; however, they failed to convey any solid information to the media.

Regional Police Officer Rawalpindi Capt (retd) Zubair reached the spot where heavy contingents of the police were already deployed.

NNI adds: More than 200 police and military personnel took part in the operation backed by helicopters.

As a result of the operation, Dr Arshad, top commander of the banned outfit, and four other people were killed.

Arshad was also wanted by the Saddar police of Mandi Bahauddin in a murder case.

Our Chakwal correspondent adds: Bodies of the terrorists were shifted to the Gharibwal Cement Factory.

According to police sources this hilly area is a haven for criminals and proclaimed offenders as it is difficult to comb the dense growth of trees and bushes.

Security forces launched an operation in the Pir Chunbbal area of Pind Dadan Khan in response to the death of five intelligence officials during a covert raid on a militant hideout on Saturday, reported Express 24/7.
The shrine of Pir Chunbbal was sealed and every person in the vicinity was thoroughly searched. The security in the area was also beefed up and the elite force was stationed on roads leading to the shrine.
According to local sources, the area around the shrine houses many criminals and it is also possible that the banned outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi has its presence in the area.
Meanwhile, the bodies of two security personnel, Mazhar and Amir, have been handed over to their relatives.
