3 soldiers killed in terrorist attack in Turkey’s Southeast
Tuesday, July 6, 2010
DİYARBAKIR – Daily News with wires

Three Turkish soldiers were killed in a terrorist attack on a military outpost in southeastern Turkey, Anatolia news agency reported Tuesday. Twelve attackers were killed during the clash between the military and the group, sources said.

The assailants, suspected to be members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, opened fire on the Beyyurdu gendarme outpost with long-range weapons in the Şemdinli town of Hakkari province early on Tuesday. 3 soldiers were killed while three others were wounded, AFP said. 12 alleged terrorists were killed in the ensuing clashes that erupted.

Wide-scale operations were launched in the region in pursuit of the fleeing assailants.

The Beyyurdu outpost is only 15 kilometers from the Aktütün outpost where 17 Turkish soldiers were killed and 23 others injured in a PKK attack in October 2008.

In a separate incident, six soldiers were wounded late Monday when suspected PKK members opened fire on troops on security duty at an outpost in the eastern province of Elazığ, the army said. An attacker was killed when soldiers returned fire, AFP reported.

On a rural road near Lice town of southeastern Diyarbakır province, remote-controlled land mines were exploded Tuesday morning as a military vehicle was passing. Doğan News Agency reported no injuries.

In Hakkari late Monday, two soldiers were wounded when they were fired upon and another two stepped on a landmine, Anatolia news agency reported.

A group also opened fired at a gendarmerie outpost in Genç town of southeastern Bingöl province, Doğan news agency reported.

The Turkish military has increased its operations in the Southeast and northern Iraq since the PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, has dramatically stepped up violence over recent weeks.

The PKK took up arms for Kurdish self-rule in the Southeast in 1984, sparking a conflict that has claimed some 45,000 lives.
