3 mln martyrs claim baseless: Oli

Every single Bangladeshi I have came across online have their family participated in Liberation war, and if older, he himself was a soldier! :P

Too many plonkers running around claiming to be freedom fighters. I know this chick in dhaka, she is from a famous family; her grandfather was a known reputed rajakar; but her dad claims to be a "mukti jodha"

.
Oli Ahmed is a rajakar even though is a 'freedom fighter", he is probably not a freedom fighter; faking it. What is his credibility? is he a statistician? did he do any proper research with field studies? newspapers from usa and ussr reported high figures. Who cares what this rajakar has to say?

Once again your awami scented tone coming out of your statement. Oli Ahmed is a decorated freedom fighter and ex colonel of Bangladesh army. Which world do you live in? Just because one contradict motivated awami story design to play politics over dead bodies of myrters, does not mean he or she is "rajakar". Get rid of nasty and out dated awami habit.

Dead Reckoning by Sarmila Bose - review

A long-overdue study of Bangladesh's war of independence

Martin Woollacott

guardian.co.uk, Friday 1 July 2011 18.55 EDT

The eyes would widen and the head move from side to side in the striking Bengali gesture of affirmation. "How many were killed?" we would ask refugees who had fled from areas where the Pakistani army and its auxiliaries were attempting to suppress the Bangladesh independence movement. "Lakhs and lakhs!" came the answer. Journalists who covered the Bangladesh war in 1971 remember the phrase with a mixture of amusement and frustration. Lakh is the Indian word for 100,000, and it sometimes seemed as if the majority of Bengalis knew no other number, or, if they did, it was "crore" – ten million – at least when describing the atrocities and depredations of their West Pakistani oppressors. Reporters had no doubt that there were such atrocities. Some of them witnessed bloody incidents or their aftermath, but for the most part correspondents had to rely on the accounts of others. Between the protestations of the Pakistani military, for whom all Bengali deaths were those of "miscreants" or criminals, and the manifest exaggerations of inflamed and sometimes bereaved East Bengalis, it was difficult to steer a measured course.

The numbers mattered, and matter still, because they make the difference between seeing the war as a tragedy and seeing it as a terrible crime, indeed as a genocide. That in turn is important because it profoundly affects the way in which the peoples of South Asia understand both their separate and their common histories. Much that is both wrong and dangerous in the subcontinent today, from Pakistan's paranoia to India's extreme self-righteousness and Bangladesh's sense that it is neglected and ignored, can be traced to the 1971 conflict, even if the roots go back further still. Sarmila Bose's attempt to set the numerical record straight in her aptly named book is a contribution to a debate that ought to have taken place a long time ago but instead has hardly started. It is a grim kind of accountancy, because even when she concludes, as she often does, that fewer, sometimes far fewer, died than claimed, still we are dealing with murder, rape, unnatural deaths and the destruction of individuals and their families in a land that had joyously embraced the idea of Pakistan less than a generation before.

Her method is to take the worst of the alleged atrocities, and then to attempt to reconstruct and quantify them by interviewing the participants on both or, rather, all sides. She wove back and forth between Pakistan and Bangladesh, seeing mainly retired Pakistani officers in the west, and survivors of killings and their relatives in the east, as well as members of the non-Bengali and non-Muslim minorities. Bose (pictured) seems to have been the first to do this. It is a method not without its problems. My own feeling, remembering how charming Pakistani officers, like their Indian equivalents, can be, is that she may have been a bit too ready to accept the honourable, just-trying-to-do-our-duty image that those officers naturally prefer to convey, and that she may also be too convinced that the received wisdom needs to be entirely overturned. Yet when she underlines how stretched the Pakistani forces were, how unready they were for the role of suppression that was thrust on them, and how perplexed they were in the face of a Bengali hostility that seemed to them so disproportionate, what she writes rings very true.

Bose's case-by-case arithmetic leads her in the end to estimate that between 50,000 and 100,000 people died in 1971. One lakh, in other words, at most. One cannot say that she absolutely proves this, but her evidence points in that direction, and, in any case vastly away from the figure of 3 million still proclaimed in Bangladesh and India. The wider revision of the conflict's history she implies exonerates the Pakistani government of any plot to rule the east by force, suggests that the Bengali leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman let the genie of nationalism out of the bottle but could not control it, and insists that the conflict was a civil war within East Pakistan. The killings by Bengalis of non-Bengali minorities, of Bengalis who stuck with the idea of a united Pakistan, and even of some Hindu Bengalis – all of whose deaths were attributed at the time to the Pakistani army – needs to be reckoned in any fair balance. The notion that the Bangladesh movement was non-violent, even Gandhian, was always fantastical. Bose has written a book that should provoke both fresh research and fresh thinking about a fateful turning point in the history of the subcontinent.

• This article was amended on 4 July 2011. The original referred to a "crore" as one million. This has been corrected.

It's never possible to quantify the number of people who were killed, however it was surely a pretty big number. The report of International Commission of Jurists regarding Bangladesh war doesn't quote any number.

And you really cannot obtain an accurate number when there was carnage and chaos.
The body count will always be higher as every sector suffered under Tikka Khan being let loose.
So when there are cries of injustice from across the country.. the numbers will always be inflated..
and then there are political means as well.

Many people who helped the British during 1857 self styled themselves as freedom fighters.
Its just a typical tactic.

This girl last sent me a photo of her late grandpa's poster with both khaleda zia and sheikh hasina's portrait beside it:lol:....Lets just say they are one of the elite families of gulshan, dhaka and one of the first. Opportunistic b*st**ds

The death count of "3 million" is definitely baseless, but it's funny how we ourselves try to deny a genocide committed on our own ethnicity. Munshiji, whatever the number is, the killing of innocents started from Day 1:

I think on March 26, these evil terrorists were using their rickshaws to destroy Pak army:

I don't think it can be described as genocide. All sides were committing racial crimes so all were committing genocide then. Interesting that the real figure is probably around 30000 - 60000 dead and we act like a bunch of cry babies but whereas 2 million Vietnamese were killed during the Vietnam war but the US and Vietnam are now the best of friends. 20 million Russians were killed in the 2nd World War but they are now Germany's largest trading partner. Foreign policy cannot be based on emotions but national interests. Talking crap about 71 does not serve our present national interests as India gains from our animosity.

.
Any rational person would realize that the 3 million figure is a hoax propaganda kept alive by BAL for cheap politics. The war lasted 9 months (approx. 270 days) and is 3 million died that would mean 11111 deaths/ day. Even nazi germany couldn't it. Were the PAK soldiers robots or something. Its impossible to know the correct figure since it was a bloody civil war, but the inflated Awami Inida propaganda number is ridiculous. Its good to see that col. Oli Ahemed is coming out and speaking the truth. We need to revitalize true history of 1971 for our own national interest. Couple of my friends also realized that this is a hoax figure when I explained to them the utter ridiculousness of the figure and they are seculars not "islamaist".

yes because i spoke about him saying that the figure was too low and he has his own personal agenda on getting supporters who believe the figure was too low? any man who says that only a meager 30000 people were killed is a rajakar. If he wasnt a public figure and said it in public, he would have gotten his *** kicked in public.

Everything doesn't have to be about awami league and bnp. Every heard of bipartisanship? if not I have a video for you, which is a must watch for fanatics like yourself.

freedom isn’t cheap bro it only knows one currency blood and blood

In other words, the fault was of evil hindus whose chanakya tactics caused barrier amongst brothers and compel them to commit fitna. How convenient!
I just wonder why the people of my land did all the hardship for these bunch. They should just have let the PA do whatever they were doing.

Abir da don't you guys get bored repeating the same $hit of "all the hardships and sacrifices we have done". What hardships you done have exactly. You and I both know that your witch Indira did all
the "hardships" to break PAK and annex the newly formed BD. It was by Allah(swt) grace that we
somehow got out of India's grip thanks to a leader like Zia Ur rahman.

Anyway the article says about casualties in direct war. There were may who didn't participate in direct war but were killed just for being Awami supporter, Hindu, Student or intellectual. That's why we call this genocide actually. Munshi as usual put a spin around the story.

What about all the Biharis and non-bengalis who have died. It was a disastrous civil that resulted from the advocation of ethnic nationalism from 2 "supposed" leaders of East & west wing and atrocities were committed by both sides . I really feel ashamed when I realize that so many non-bengalis died, this poor bhiharis came from Bihar in 1947 to escape the genocide on them by Hindus but they were slaughtered like $hit in their new homeland all because of ethnic nationalism.
BTW most of those 1 million who fled to India, 70% were hindus and most never returned. SO
it was bengali and non-bengali muslims who were slaughtered in their homeland while Hindus
largely escaped the violence.

Even if it was greater than 30000, it is utterly ridiculous to repeat the propaganda of 3 million. BNP never mentions 3 million but
only mention the fact that lots martyrs died. They know that 71 issue is not good for unity of the nation and is not relevant
in today's geopolitical scenario . It is an traditional awami habit branding any one that disagrees with them to be "razakar"
and "Fanatics" but its BAL who are the real "razakars" and "fanatics". All of their actions proves that.

.
how crap you Luffy - If india didnt intervene where east bengal would have been now , crying and running for help , when someone helped you should be thank full -- it was not a problem of india that east & west pakistani politicians fought for their chairs - conspiracy theories can circulate -- think now east bengal -bangladesh is moving in the right direction to become a prosperous country and see what is happening with pakistan & afganistan ---

you dont make sense. where did awami league or bnp come in this debate?

.
Sometimes its pathetic to see our own people try to be more Pakistani than the Pakistanis themselves:hitwall:...there was genocide and it started by Pakistani military first then Bengalis retaliate and in the process non-Bengalis died...You can't ignore all the wrong doings done by the then Pakistani military top brass...Even Pakistanis won't like these kind of nonsense buttering

.
I think it's possible to count the approximate number of people killed/missed in 71 even today. In every village/locality many older people are still alive who witnessed the 71 war, they could tell us how many people from their own village/locality were killed or lost in the 9 months. Last of all every family knows who among their ancestors they lost in war. Unfortunately the govt doesn't want to find out the truth, because propaganda thrives on ignorance.
