Three persons including a minor were killed and five others injured in intense cross-LoC shelling in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Sunday, army said. Several residential houses suffered damage in the shelling.
Defence spokesperson Rajesh Kalia said, “Pakistan targeted civilian population in Kupwara sector near the line of control resulting in killing of three innocent civilians including a woman and a child. In response to unprovoked shelling by Pakistani troops, Indian army retaliated strongly and effectively.”
Two of the deceased are Shameema Bano (36) and Javed Ahmad Khan both residents of village Reddi in Chowkibal. Eight year old Zeeshan was killed in Tumina village which falls under Handwara police station.
SSP Kupwara, Shari Ram Amberkar, said, “Two persons died of splinter injuries after Pakistani troops targeted village Reddi in Chowkibal area. One person was injured in the incident. Six residential houses suffered damage.”
SSP Handwara, Dr Sandeep, confirmed the death of the child and injuries to four civilians besides damage to some houses at Tumina village in Handwara.

Locals said that at around 4 pm Pakistani troops resorted to intense shelling in the Chowkibal area of Tanghdar sector. They said as the exchange of shelling intensified, Pakistani troops targeted several other villages which include Manzgam, Malikpora, TCP, Hafrada and Kralpora.
In Tumina village, locals said that it was a war-like situation. They said some shells fell on residential houses while some shells landed over parked vehicles.
“We have never witnessed such a situation here. As shells landed in the village, several of them hit houses and vehicles. It looks like a war zone with flames emanating from houses and vehicles. People were crying for help and help came from nowhere,” said Asadullah Mir of Tumina village in Handwara
