KHYBER AGENCY Masked men armed with weapons tortured 29 Afghan passengers near the Michini Checkpost when they were going to cross the Torkham border, official and local sources said on Thursday.Sources said unidentified people equipped with sophisticated weapons, on Thursday noon, appeared on Landi Kotal-Torkham Road near Michini post and started misbehaving with Afghan nationals. As the Afghan national protested, the gunmen dragged them out of the passengers vehicles, tortured them physically, snatched their valuables and tore their passports, sources said.
The masked assailants thrashed me and snatched my money, said Mohammad Jan, an Afghan national. We are taking revenge of those 29 Pakistani nationals who had been treated badly in Afghanistan and whose passports had been torn and thrown into River Kabul, an Afghan national quoted the masked men as saying. On intimation, Khasadar Force at Michini Checkpost rushed to the scene and engaged the miscreants, sources added. Two Khasadar Force personnel were slightly injured during the cross-firing between the militia and armed assailants, sources said.The political administration beefed up security after the incident to avoid more untoward incidents and launched a search operation in the area. Five suspected locals, Habibullah, Abidullah, Mirwali, Khan Wali and Haqeeq were arrested during the search operation in the area near Michni Checkpost, said APA Landi Kotal. Later the tortured Afghanis were taken in Khasadar security to Torkham border from where they crossed the border safely to Afghanistan, sources said.Furious over the mistreatment by the unidentified people with their countrymen, Afghan border security personnel tried to close the border, but after the assurance of the Torkham political administration to take strict action against the culprits, they decided against it, sources added.
