Around 25,000 farmers in Mathura have sought permission from President Pranab Mukherjee to commit suicide on August 15, after a 17-year-long struggle to get compensation from the government.

The farmers have been highlighting their grievances for the past few weeks. Kisan Sangh, a farmer leader, accused the district authorities of ignoring the interests of farmers and their needs.

The farmers are demanding compensation for damage to standing crops which were submerged as a result of the rising level of water of the nearby Yamuna river. Their land has been lost at four times the rate and many of them are still in jail following protests in December on the Delhi-Agra highway.

Officials have identified around a few numbers who need to be compensated. “The Allahabad High Court is seized of the matter, and a decision is likely in a few days” says an official.

“We have lost all and want to end our lives. We want the president’s permission,” said Roop Singh, another farmer.

Seeing no hope, now the villagers under the banner of Bharatiya Kisan Sangh sent a letter to the President on Saturday seeking permission to commit suicide by hanging. According the government officials’ valuation, 25,000 farmers should get around Rs 800 crore as compensation for around 700 acres of land as reported by TOI

In 2014, India recorded 12,360 farm suicides. This is slightly more than the number of farmer suicides registered in 2013, but in general there is a slow decline in the number of officially recorded farm suicides.

The time trend for Total and farmers suicide rate per 100000 in India - Suicide rate for general population still remains higher than that of Farmers.

Bloody Jokers

Why do they need permission to hang themselves ? They can do so anytime.

This compensation thing is the biggest racket in West UP. First Mayawati then Mulayam keep promising them more compensation ( for the 2nd or 3rd time in addition to what they have already received )for lands acquired years ago.

This election ploy is the best way to drain Govt coffers and pass the added burden to flat owners who buy in the those areas.

This is just a racket.

Trying to arm-twist the government.... they are a lalchi lot... when there is a bumper crop.. they want high prices...when there is a bad crop ..they want all of that to be brought out of my tax money....when crop fails ..they want compensation...then they want free electricity... free water.... they pay no taxes... every major fertilizer is subsidized... all out of my taxes..that I earn slogging day in day out.

Exactly.. no one has answer to this....

Farming is a business like every other business... and like every other business there are risks and rewards... risk is crops might fail or there might be a bad crop...the reward is a great crop.

Why is there a need to compensate a failed crop... does the government compensate other businesses.. NO.

in karnataka state, there is currently a suicide mania among farmers.

as long as a single suicide occurs in india, farmer or otherwise... as long as a single "honor killing" occurs... india should be considered better off under britishers.

suicides cannot be explained away by graphs.

farming cannot be a business like mukesh ambani sells cell phone connections or "lovely professional university" produces engineers by the 10,000.

continuance of capitalism in 1947 is why in 2015, farmers and others suicide.

Farming is business.. just like any other....and there are risks associated with it....
Farmers grow the crops and sell.... wherever there is a transaction ...its called business....and now don't blame Ambani for slogging his *** of and creating an empire... he was an entrepreneur.. he used his skills to create something....

Show me a business that enjoys this luxury.... Free Water... free electricity....subsidized seed and fertilizer... guarantee of sale.... and if crop fails... claim damages....

will our president's permission work or they are asking specifically for Indian president.
