Putting PR on right track: 23 locomotives to arrive today

ISLAMABAD: The first consignment of 23 locomotives from China will arrive today (Monday) for use in freight operations. According to a Pakistan Railways official, the freight train operations would be increased gradually. He said that by the end of this year, at least six freight trains would be made operational, which would help generate revenue of Rs 20 million to Rs 25 million per day. “At present, three to four freight trains are being operated on a daily basis, which have increased revenue,” he added. He said the entire fleet of locomotives had outlived their utility and the older locomotives needed to be replaced with new ones as soon as possible. On the directives of Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique, he said that all-out efforts were being made to ensure timely arrival and departure of trains and make Pakistan Railways a profitable organisation.
He added that dedication and hard work was required to steer the department out of challenges. Private investment would be welcomed where it was needed and it would be done through a transparent method, he added.
The official said that steps were being taken to utilise the PR land in the most efficient way. He said that the department was also going for computerising data of its lands.

Better to take Germans help in developing our own locomotives and Carriages...

Well we have 150-200 Engines rotting in sheds , in USA there are companies that can fix a Locomotives in 6 business days
take it apart & put it back in with repairs in 6 days (1 Loco)

Reference US locomotive Shop Norfolk Southern's

They fix 500 Locomotives a year !!!

In 6 days they fix a Locomotive

If Pakistani Government was serious they would "send all 150-200 Engines out of comission to USA with this company get all engines fixed brand new standard , in 6 months time

We have a local facility but I doubt it is "PRODUCTIVE" as the company in USA in term of fast "COMPLETE REPAIR"

I am just suprised why Pakistani Government does not gets a "Deal' passed with US aid , channels , as it's 100% CIVILIAN project

Overhaul of 150-200 Locomotive Engine at max would cost 100-150 Million dollars which should be attained via US aid channels instead.

US Engineering /Repair Overhauls is always top notch ( The video below is the final portion of overhaul i.e paint and body work but the company actually reassembles full engine)

Video where they state ... they do 1 Locomotive "COMPLETE REBUILD" 6 days

  • Probbaly just 100 Million USD to 200 Million USD to fix every thing broken in Pakistan Railways in 6 months

Neglect of engine repairs locally in Pakistan before current appointment of Railway cheif

All these engines instead of standing here , should be sent to USA for repairs
US company could probbaly fix all these engines in 6 months time

Not sure why the repair of these items is not brought up under Kerry Lugar assistance to economy

Note they fix 500 Engines in year , the picture below has odd10 engines

Generally if the employees of railways take salaries they should at least take a cleaning water and clean the engines daily even if they don't work or oil them untill engine repairs take place

  • If they can't fix the loco fine pick up cloth and water and soap wash the locomotive
  • After its cleaned up grese the boogie (wheel) components
  • Can't fix locomotive , go out push the locomotive to place and then paint it
  • Can't make locomotive run , fine at least fix the windshield or internal components
  • If can't fix locomotive fine you get salaries , fix the tracks and holes outside or paint the stations belonging to Pakistan railways
  • Fine if locomotive can't be fixed and train is cancelled , fine pick up the garbage outside the station clean up the facility / station as you are getting paid by Railways

These same engines when they will come with repairs from USA would look something like this

That is difference between qualty of work or care , USA takes engineering as Engineering
and it would be good if our engines are sent to US for repairs

not everything can be reparied. especially seeing these photos
i think the real issue with diesel engines is there maintenance.
we have to think about switching to electric motors for more efficiency

We bought some engines lately and they are now in junk... Hope this time its different

i think the real issue with diesel engines is there maintenance.
we have to think about switching to electric motors for more efficiency

Every thing is repairable that is what "Engineers" specially one that specialize in Mechanical designations can do
I think in Pakistan the concept of mechanical engineering is limited to , taking old spare part and putting new part in.

Anything more the general mind set of local work can't handle it or lack of training or spareparts is to blame.

Reality is "Every" thing that has a "Frame" integrity can be repaired..

Process of Overhaul: (USA)
The unit is cleaned
The unit is deassembled , piece by piece untill its barebone all the screws are taken out
The bigger "mechanical pieces and lines are removed"
The frame is "treated" for structural repair work and greesed etc according to specifications
The mechanical pieces like "Engines" and other mechanical gears go thru indivdual "restoration process"
These units are deassembled and reassembled after treatment , bad individual components are replaced.
Every thing is put together. The floor , the nut/ bolts , the large mechanica pieces
The electrical lines
The hydrolics lines / any thing of that nature (Many times new lines are placed) since the engine is taken apart its easier to place new lines in
The engine is tested all checks are done , then metallic exterior is placed back , the lights and other management components are installed
Parts are welded/bolted where needed and the engine goes to body work (paint and shine etc)
Full quality checks are done and performace tests are done on output power

Process in Pakistan
Oh , engine Kharab hai ... park it in yard cancel the train service , tell boss part nahi hai.
Boss to Government - COMPLETE LOSS , Locomotive company's fault lagti hai
200 employees responsible for that locomotives wait now on orders for part take vacation
1 Month later , lights are missing on loco
2 Months later , AC is missing
3 Months later door of locomotive is stolen
One election year someone comes by and puts grafiti marking on loco

The problem I think is due to "Lack of training" and also lack in skills to repair parts and lack of local industry that manufactures the locomotive internal parts and components.

This is how a Locomotive should look like "always" when workers hied for job do their jobs

Example of Restoration 1930 Locomotive completely restored can you tell if its new or old ?
Same quality and shaine on the machine looks like Ferrari

From Pakistan's prespective , sending our 150 Locomotives marked as "UNREPAIRABLE" to USA

Turn around time : Six Months only for 125-150 Locomotives

Warranty: Generally 5 years but the repaired engines are suppose to run for 15 years

Pakistan Government Cost : $200 Million Dollars , should be coverable expense or
Kerry Lugar Economy Plan : Covers 75 % of the bill as work is done in USA.

I don't see why we can't get these kind of deal thru contacts in USA as its a Civilian Project

Vs Pakistans internal factory's capacity was like 1 Locomotive per month !!!

US compaies are fixing 500 locomotives in year while Pakistan can only partically fix 12 Locomotives in year , its a very simple decision
