20 top scientists quit DRDO in 6 months

In a severe blow to the already shrinking number of researchers in defence laboratories across the nation, 20 top scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) have quit their jobs in the last six months.

With the economy looking up and IT sector beginning to hire in a big way, defence scientists are opting for better opportunities. Scientists working in the field of computer science, electronics and communications are the most sought after by the private sector, as per DRDO records.

Vijaykumar Saraswath, scientific adviser to defence minister A K Antony, said on Friday: "In the last six months, I have signed about 20 resignations of top scientists. We are losing scientists from our labs and IT sector is picking them up. There were no such en masse resignations in the last two years."

To retain the bright scientists, he said "we need to have good HR policies, which are now in place,", he added.

But there is hope. A large number of young NRI science graduates are approaching DRDO for work. "Also, there are a lot of youngsters from our own universities who have shown interest in pursuing research. We are looking forward to recruiting youngsters," said Saraswat.

In 2008, when 285 scientists had resigned over the span of three years, defence minister A K Antony had promised incentives to arrest the attrition rate in DRDO. The proposed incentives included providing career enhancement opportunities to scientists by granting them study leaves.

Hope some of them are absorbed by private players. I personally know of scientiest who have resigned from DRDO.

Like the NSG commando polishing shoes for a Major, i do not wanna know why these scientist left DRDO.

What i am more concerned about is where are they going? Like, the scientist, did they retire or are they working for private companies? Because Private companies will gain immensely.

Also this retard, Vijaykumar Saraswath, doesn't know how valuable an experienced scientist is compared to fresh graduates.

Just my $ 1/50.

This happened about 12 yrs ago. One of my friend's dad was a scientist at DRDO. He worked there for 20yrs and they were paying him Rs.25k. An MNC offered him 3Lakhs per month. He accepted the offer. Some times its not enough if you respect and serve your country. The country should treat the scientists with respect too.

@Topic:-

I want gov. to increase the salary's of all the scientists with incentives so that there should be no need of going to private sector.

The leave their job to work for Indian or foreign MNC's,a lot of them r absorbed in IT sector.

I used to have a friend in HAL,he only worked for 1 yr there, later he left to join Airbus, and u know the deal he got.

He was earning some Rs 4 lakhs/annum with HAL,now working for $110,000/annum.

The only solution to deal with this to make defense sector and R@D in India completely open to private sector, right now the shortage is because the sector is not at all lucrative,as only govt companies r present mostly in the field and they do not pay even 1/10 of what those private mega conglomerates pay.

They will just form private companies and get defence contracts because of their inside contacts.

They will make 10x as much.

Welcome to free market capitalism.

It's the freshmen who do the bulk of work actually, top people only lay down the design and that's it.

Time to increase the salary & perks to scientists.....we need the best in our labs..

Nothing's happening now before the next Pay Commission and that's at least 10 years away still.

Nothing's happening until that typical Sarkari mentality changes.

People like Priyanka Chopra stash away crores to save tax and the soldiers and scientists have to pay the price.

Future of India's indigenous defence industry lies in private sector hands, unless people are given rewards incommensurate with their performance and unless they have to be afraid to remain in job/business Indians aren't going to work hard enough.

Is this the real reason or they were unable to deliver anything worthwhile since DRDO was constituted except for the failed projects to show for on their resume'.
