Taking to 394 planes of various types that have been lost by the IAF over the last 20 years.
While 151 IAF pilots have lost their lives during the last decade, deaths have declined sharply over the years, from 17 in 1999 to zero in 2012.

As many as 198 MiG aircraft—often dubbed “flying coffins” by pilots—of different variants have crashed over the last 20 years.

The MIG-21 aircraft was the first supersonic jet inducted in 1964 by the IAF and is in use since then.MIG-21s will be in use till 2018, until the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)Tejas is commissioned.

As regards helicopters, the Cheetah SA-315, built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has reported 24 crashes.
Next is the Russian-built MI-17 with 15 crash incidents, followed by the Chetak with 14 cases.

This year, there have been five IAF aircraft crashes:
*July 25 ,2014: ‘Dhruv’ of the Indian Air Force helicopter crashed in a village in Sitapur district, barely 35 km from Lucknow, killing all seven occupants, including the pilot and co-pilot.

* May 27, 2014: MiG-21on May 27 crashed in Jammu & Kashmir,leading to the pilot’s death.

* March 28, 2014: A C-130J Super
Hercules Special Operations transport aircraft crashes while on a tactical training mission, killing five crew members on board.

* Jan 22, 2014: A Jaguar combat jet
crashes near Bholasar village in
Rajasthan's Bikaner district. The pilot and co-pilot eject safely. According to the defence ministry, the pilots detected a technical problem while landing at Nal airport in Bikaner and ejected.

* Nov 8, 2013: A MiG-29 crashes near Jamnagar in Gujarat but the pilot ejects safely. The aircraft was on a routine sortie from the Jamnagar airbase.

* July 15, 2013: A MiG-21 Bison
crashes while landing at Uttarlai
airbase in Rajasthan's Barmer district,killing the pilot. The aircraft had taken off from the airbase on a
routine training sortie and crashed
while landing.

* June 25, 2013: Twenty people were
killed when a MI-17-V5 helicopter
crashes while ferrying rescue personnel in the wake of the Uttarakhand floods.

*June 7, 2013: A MiG-21 crashes in
Rajasthan's Barmer district, with the
pilot ejecting safely. The aircraft had
taken off from the Uttarlai airbase
and was on a routine sortie. It
crashed 40 km from Barmer.

* Feb 19, 2013: A Sukhoi SU-30
combat jet crashes in Rajasthan's
Jaisalmer district; both pilots eject
safely.

* Feb 12, 2013: A MiG-27 aircraft
crashes in Rajasthan's Barmer district but the pilot ejects safely. The aircraft was on a routine training sortie when it crashed near Allawani Ki Dhani after taking off from Uttarlai airbase.

the calculation is wrong. 394/20 =19.7 aircrafts per air , not 39. anyway still it is very high number

Even in that 20 year period, 84 are Mig 21 variants and 14 are retired Mig 23, making a total of 98 out of 139 crashes. hoepfully by 2017 when Mig 21s are out, these numbers will reduce drastically.

whatever.... live with it!!! I didn't write it!!
But you were the one to write the title of this thread my friend,its 394 crashes in 20yrs thats like approx 20 crashes a year. I would request you to edit the title. :)

induct tejas mk1 200 and mk2 400 approx will solve the problem

Too many crashes.
I'm sorry but who are you to make such arbritarty claims?

In 2012-13 the IAF 0.22 crashes per 10,000 flight hours, amongst the lowest crash rates of any AF anywhere on this planet. The figures for 2013-14 haven't been released yet but there wasn't a significant jump in the span of 12 months so last year's crash rate is also likely to be relatively low.

The issue is that any crashes in India (due to the "flying coffin" saga) receive disproportionate and sensationalist coverage from the Indian media. Also note that the IAF is one of the largest AFs in the world operating vast numbers of fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft (many of them well past their originally dictated life spans) so the number of crashes will always be high and thus certain members from neighbouring countries may like to hype up such incidents without taking this into account.

I'll state again- the crash RATE in the IAF is nowhere near the highest in the world and WILL be coming down further as the older a/c in the fleet are replaced more and more aggressively in the coming years...

Don't tell me that IAF is not riddled with the plane crashes which is amongst the highest in the world.

To be a best in the world we should aim to bring it among the lowest in the world. Mig-21 crashes are understandable but crashes of likes of C-130 J or Su-30s are just unacceptable.
