We are celebrating 53rd Defence Day with the slogan of “Humain Pyar Hai Pakistan Se!” The 1965 war also known as the Indo-Pak war is still controversial. 1965 war was the second war over the status of Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan. The outcome of the war and victory status is still the topic of discussion. India stated that they won the war while Pakistan’s claims are strikingly different. Here are some facts that will improve your insight about the 1965 wars! So let’s begin this journey in the history.

- India had the infantry of 700,000, 720 tanks and 700+ aircraft. Pakistan had 260,000 infantry, 756 tanks and 280 aircraft .
- 8200 Indian soldiers were killed or captured whereas Pakistan’s loss was 5259 men.
- India lost 110 aircraft while Pakistan lost 43 aircraft.
- Pakistan defended when war came to its international boundary. It made Pakistan believe that it can defend itself the country 6 times more populous and occupy 7th largest area in the world.
- The war was well played on ground and air field! The initial achievement of Indian Army include Battle of Asal Uttar and Phillora, but don’t underestimate the Battle of Chawinda, still known as “The Graveyard of Indian Tanks”.

Battle of Chawinda – The Largest Tank Battle since WWII
Chawinda is known as the “Graveyard of Indian Tanks”. 1965 war is also known as the largest tank battle since World War II. The nearest city to Chawinda is Sialkot and the Indian Army was planning to set it as a base. Afterall they had 230 tanks while Pakistan had merely 132 tanks! Well they were not able to boast about it. They lost 120 tank in Chawinda hence the place is known as the graveyard of Indian Tanks!

What we lacked in technology, we compensated with raw passion to bleed for our country, soldiers such as M. M. Alam and Maqbool Hussain made the victory possible. We defeated the force double in numbers and their soldiers were captured in the open field. As the post WW II was all about air-warfare, even though it was not a clean sweep, it was a successive achievement and the credit goes to Pakistan Air Force. Pakistan was victorious on ground, in the sea, and in skies too!

Pakistan won this war by all metrics this is the war that showed why the indus valley reigned 5000 years over the region they are not our competitors nor equals on the land look how they outnumbered us and how we handled them.. Next conflict curtain will come down on gangus....

The war started when India attacked Pakistan with the purpose to defeat her. Pakistan beat her back resoundingly. It was a stalemate, as both sides agreed to a pre-1965 armistice and ceasefire. So by that mere fact neither side won. Pakistan did manage to capture some areas especially in Rajastan (1000+ sq KMs) sector, but all were returned at the end. Pakistan did fare well in terms of men and material and in air war dominated. But we did not destroy India's fighting capability. If war had persisted it would have ground both sides down. You only win a war when after the war you sue peace on your terms. The terms were mutual so no one won.

- No permanent territorial gains by either side (as both sides went back as per Tashkent agreement)
- India realized that Pakistan will continue to rely on military solution and we need efficient external intelligence to forewarn us

Wonder why no Indian ever refers to the Rann of Kutch incident which happened in the same year? They always say operation Gibraltar started the war, even though they did an illegal push in the rann of kutch before hand.

1. Pakistan sent militants with the intention of sowing discord within IOK. The objective was never to "Conquer" IOK, which would have been next to impossible with such a small force to begin with.
2. India invaded Pak from across the IB. This is clearly documented. Your military failed to hold any land and had to retreat.
Indian's claim they were victorious because Pak was never able to achieve point #1. This logic makes absolutely no sense because Paks policy was simply to disrupt the law and order in IOK which it has been successful at doing from the 80s onwards anyways.
Pakistan claims they were victorious because of point #2. This logic clearly makes sense, as it was india who mobilized its armoured corps into pakistan and failed to achieve anything.
