1857: How The Brits Blew Up Indian Mutineers With Canons!

I came across this recently and was outraged by the way the British killed captured Indian 'mutineers' during the 1857 revolt.

This disturbing painting by Vasili Vasilyevich Vereshchagin shows British soldiers executing participants in the Indian Revolt of 1857. Alleged 'rebels' were tied to the muzzles of cannon, which would then be fired.

This brutal method of execution made it nearly impossible for the sepoys' families to perform the proper Hindu or Muslim funeral rites.

Have things changed? I don't think so, what with Western troops seen urinating on dead bodies and other such despicable acts in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

And these guys are the first to point fingers at all and sundry for human rights violations!

I remember a similar painting from the history book I studied in school. It's as horrific now as is it was then. The sheer cost of this method of execution is a testament to the fact that it wasn't intended as an effective method of execution rather it was an act of intimidation through barbarity.

Wow! This really sucks! I agree with Icarus that it was more an act of intimidation through such heinous acts. But, like the Taliban who get together villagers to witness executions, I wonder if this too was given enough publicity to put the fear of God into the mutineers?

Whatever, this is horrendous cruelty!

^^in all sincerity ill disagree. If not all ,the subcontinents own stupidity is also an important factor in all the problems we now face.

20 years from now when we hit arnd maybe 10 trillion, the economic angle of the British mess would be a thing of the past.
