Chairman of Hindustan Aeronautics, T Suvarna Raju in an interaction with media confirmed that around 160 Sukhoi-30’s have been delivered to Indian air force till March 2015 which have been build from Raw material stage.

Russia initially had supplied 50 Sukhoi’s out of which 18 aircrafts were Su-30MKs which were returned to Russia and were later replaced by modern Su-30MKIs.

HAL has promised 2019 deadline to deliver remaining jets to India air force and has increased Production capability and has been delivering 15 aircraft per year lately.

Production timeline saw two-and-a-half-year delay from the 2016-17 target that was set when the contract was signed with Russia in 2000 due to delays in transfer of technology and delays in Indigenisation of many components in India.

IAF’s total order of sukhoi-30MKI stands at 272 aircrafts. IAF had added Two aircrafts for early attrition suffered but since then IAF has lost 4 more su-30s including last Su-30 aircraft which was lost in Assam. IAF likely will take a call on small order for Su-30s as Attrition replacement to aircrafts lost in the spate of recent crashes.

HAL chairman asserted that the experience and expertise gained through the programme meant that HAL could very barely be considered an OEM for the type. HAL recently completed indigenous overhauling of sukhoi-30 in its Nashik plant and will offer its services to other Aircraft type operators in the region.

If we making SU30s from raw material stage than why not increase the total number to make up some required numbers.
How about doubling it to 550 :D

Excellent work by HAL. This means Indian Airforce has now 160+51-5=206 Jets in service. HAL said that availability of jet shall be increased by some 13% in a year. It is as good as having one and half more squordern in service.

With production of FGFA and possibly Rafale coming up, HAL would do well to complete the production of remaining contracted planes quickly. 2018-19 would be the time when FGFA production is slated to start by HAL. Also the contribution of HAL towards overhaul of fighters and spares supply is one vital area where HAL has kept the fleet operating optimally.

I have a question to ask:
Since the Sukhoi's are now that are licensed produced in India , does that mean we pay royalty to the Russians for every aircraft we manufacture....???

The additional 42 MKIs that we ordered, were also ordered from HAL's lines, to keep the production line busy, until FGFA production can start, which was facing delays. So the timeframe already is set to deliver them between 2017/19 and then turn the production line to FGFA. For MMRCA, a new production line was considered, which however might not come anymore, if the government aims only on assembling Rafales produced in France and the assembly most likely diverted to a privat partner (Reliance).
The problem is that without MMRCA, HAL is dependent on the success of the FGFA and LCA MK2 developments, to keep their production lines running, since MKI and LCA MK1 prductions will end by then. So the more these developments will be delayed, the longer their production lines will remain without any work.

Yes, for any additionally ordered MKI we pay to Russia, no matter if it's produced in India or Russia. We also pay for spares, upgrades, weapons as well as the ToT to produce techs and parts in India. The long term aim however was, to make us more and more independent, by producing more spares alone, taking over the overhaul, integrating more Indian weapons and subsystems (MFD's, EW, Astra BVR missiles, Sudarshan LGB...) and get only the necessary parts from Russia, which is a major step compared to the former Mig licence productions and we should have followed the same path with a licence production and customization of the Mig 29K.

What a lie, if india was that capable Tejas wouldn't be rotting for the last 30 years.

Imagin a scenario when 200 flankers are in Pakistani sky, engaging their Thunders and few second hand F-16s.

5 of them has been destroyed in with in 5 years
Not all crashed mki are manufactured by hal but mostly are from the old batches whom first service life were expired. And are due For MLU
