158 BRT buses to be sold to private company for just Rs288, Rs144

The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's capital city will be handed over to a private company at extremely low prices after 10 years.

Chief Executive Officer Trans Peshawar Fayyaz Khan told Geo News that the buses that have been used for 12 years or have covered about 1.2 million kilometres will be given to the private company as part of the agreement. He added that this will not affect the government in any way.

The company will buy the 18-metre-long buses for just Rs288 while the 12-metre-long ones for just Rs144. The original price of a single bus is Rs40 million. The agreement between the private company and Trans Peshawar took place two years ago, according to which the buses will be handed over to the company after 12 years. The KP government bought 158 BRT buses for Rs4.23 billion. According to international standards, there is a fixed period during which the buses can be operated.

Lahore Metro Bus Service was started in 2013 what if they would have sold these busses at same price in 2025??

This sounds like corruption and a proper investigation is needed to find out links between the buyers and sellers.

"used for 12 years or have covered about 1.2 million kilometres"

Sounds like they were at the end of their lifespan and would have been junked regardless.
I believe buses can last way longer than mere 12 years. Maybe the government is planning to replace these buses with electric ones after 12 years.

I love how the actual relevant qualifier for this decision is written right at the very end...parhnay ki waisay hi adat nhn hamaray logon ko, headline par hi guzara kar lete hain.

I do not know about this specific case, but in the airline industry, airplanes, even as new as 7 years, are sent to scrap. The engines, avionics, hydraulics etc are taken out, and the rest is sold as scrap metal, as that is actually more profitable.

I'd reckon the same is the case here. A point comes when running a bus after 10 years (and keeping it in the same conditions and standard) would eat up more money than scavenging it for mechanical parts and selling the rest as scrap.

I know a couple of city transit companies in the US that did this, they sold the buses after 17 years though.

Remember, the Peshawar BRT was sponsored by the WB and AIB, and it has to conform to international standards, this was the reason of the many delays in the project as well. There were no braille marking on the platforms for the blind, that alone added 3 months to the project.

Anyways, would be interesting to see the full story.

Moreover, the CEO of the transit company is himself saying this...this isn't an investigative piece which uncovers corruption or gets hold of secret docs, CEO khud keh raha hai yeh...

If we have an accountant amongst the group, please tells them about asset value depreciation schedule. They are considered as end of life equipment.
If it was brand new, then pits an issue.

My biggest pet peeve is that these buses are imported. All these mass transit systems should have been coordinated across the country and buses and support maintenance equipment built or at least assembled in Pakistan.

. .
I think the amount of metal that can be recovered from the buses itself will be running in several tens of thousands PKR if not more.

.
288 rupees per bus ? domn even scrap will be 1000 times more . if true so many need to be jailed

I think the logic here is that the private company will refurbish the BRTs and put them back on the road, which would increase transit connectivity.

I don't know if it'll go as planned, but this could explain the cheap price.

The biggest pet peeve I have.

Hino and Isuzu have been making busses here for 30 odd years, aur in namak haramon say abhi tak bus main AC nhn laga. They haven't changed a single nut bolt in the bus since then.

Same windows with the latch design, same doors, same anti slip metal sheet on the doors, wohi patli gauge ki chadar ki body, pathetic. They haven't even changed the bumper since 1980's.

You come to the UAE or the middle east, and all the labor transport buses are of Ashok Leyland or Tata. Same as these antique Hino buses. Why couldn't Hino export them? Even to one country?

In logon say aik bus nhn ban saki jo metro main use ho?

Just did a little bit of research, so here is where the 12 year figure comes from:

In general, most American transit systems expect their buses to have a useful life of 12 years and 250,000 miles. This time frame is due to the fact that, after their buses have been around for 12 years, they are eligible to receive replacement bus funding from the federal government. After twelve years, the "used up" buses are auctioned off for as little as $2,500 and frequently used for many more years by private operators.

This is a US DOT guideline. Makes sense that the WB and AIB will be using it in the contract agreements.

BUT, I do have a problem with this calculation. The economics between the US and Pakistan are different, and the federal funding guidelines and other factors are also different. But it makes sense that the WB would want international standards to be followed.

and our local fabricators in their workshops somehow fabricate buses that look straight out of cyberpunk
Really if the gov paid an ounce of attention to these Small workshops like they give to MNCs we would be making locally designed and manufactured vehicles

Well to be fair, the QC on these things leaves alot to be desired.

But I understand your point.

Magr hamara aik aur bhi to masla hai, we always want the government to step in and do something. We definitely do not believe in demand and supply, or value addition. Hakoomat subsidy day gi, kaheen say paisa aye ga, tab kaam hoga. Our industries are risk averse, and want things to be handed to them on a plate. I can see why they are risk averse, but it's still no excuse.
