14,000 farmers ended life in 2011

From 16000 in 2010 , down to 14000 in 2011 shows that there is improvement . However , much more actions need to be taken. Indian needs to concentrate on the manufacturing sector on a war footing . The farm sector just does not need as many people as are engaged in it . The manufacturing and construction sector need to absorb these extra people .

I hope things continue to improve , but it will take time.

Actually, i'd choose not to jump to manufacturing at the cost of agriculture. We"ll end up facing problems like Thailand did during the floods.

Better we do both paralelly, Indian Govt needs to increase R & D spending for agriculture, a second green revolution is needed with impetus on increasing production as well as transpost/storage efficiency.

Suicide is for the weak. Yes sometimes you are faced with tough situations in life, but that does not mean you end your life. You fight through it and try to solve your problems. There are hundreds of millions non-farmers starving in India and elsewhere in the world, but they dont go around killing themselves. These farmers dont deserve anyone's sympathies.

.
Seriously, I wonder what a Pakistani like Windjammer has to do with Indian farmers? Has it resulted in starvation in Pakistan? How is this affecting him physically and psychologically? In other words, what's the point of this thread?

So in that way indians never dare to post a thread or comment relaed Pakistan. Right?

I'm not a sympathizer, but they certainly deserve our attention and concern, agriculture is 60% of nation's laborer's job.

suicide is all due to stress and poverty is not the sole reason for it ! i those who can't deal with stress find the easy way out, forgetting about their loved ones. pakistan too has high suicide rates so does india . as an indian i fully accept the stress of our socio-economic scenario for it and we the next gen are up for correcting it. but my pakistani friends also should accept that pakistan has more dire problems than us . imagine my surprise when i googled "pakistan suicide" , and i found these
BBC News - Pakistan: Teenager tells of failed suicide bomb mission

Shut Up.
You have no idea under what circumstances these farmers committed suicide, and you have no right to make mockery of them.
These people live under extreme poverty, so much so, that likes of urs cant even imagine.
Its very easy to give sermons about fighting and solving problems, without having to go through the same.
Suicide is the last resort for any human being, no sane man would kill himself knowing they have their kids their wives after him.
And noone is asking for ure sympathy to these poor souls, u can keep ure sympathy to ureself.

those who can't deal with stress find the easy way out, or shall we say escape in digression.... Lol @ Ironman.

Would you like me to post statistics of suicides amongst common Indians as well as the Indian Army.

Seems you are incompetent to distinguish between suicide attacks in a war situation and those like Indian Farmers who kill themselves for lack of any hope and justice. Pathetic.

a 2006 recomendation to the government of INDIA suggest that the government has to fix the minimum support price for agri products based on not only the expence he spends on producing the corp but also add half the price to his livelyhood(half the expense of the family included).
but unfortunatly the middle men in the business reduce the price of the poor farmers produce to make themselves a good profit when the farmers kids go in hunger.
The government of INDIA neglects the interest of the farmers for that of the few middle men

The FDI in retail sector is said to help the farmers as big retail corporations will procure the crops directly from the farmers cutting out the middle men, bringing more profits to the farmers. Sadly our politicians like Mamata favor shopkeepers than farmers.

.
Not surprised, our Agriculture minister asked PM to reduce his work load so that he can become president of ICC. Shame on us and he will win by record margin.

But that doesnt suit our system either.... the shopkeepers that u mentioned are large in numbers and sudden boost in FDI in retail will hit them hard....

and do you really think these big retail shops paying good money to farmers and buy their products...... i dont think so whether it is a middle man or retail chain the farmers are getting the same .... [i got this info from my friend who is working on one of the retail chain]

Both can co exist side by side. Its not that Walmart or Tesco is going to start in every single city, town & village in this country. Also one major advantage that corner shops have over Walmart is that Walmart don't give goods out on credit.

What I posted was the words of an economist that I heard in a TV debate. Also I heard about groups like Reliance buying up produce at a higher price directly from the farmers .

“Retail chains such as Reliance Fresh, Subhiksha and Adani are offering better prices to farmers. We are left with no other option, but to match the prices being offered by the retail majors. This has eaten into our margins by at least 10 to 15 per cent,” said Nitin Mathur, CEO, Locus.

Its from 2007..don't know whether it changed in 2012.

you see windjammer "when a house is on fire people don't die due to drowning" ! in your country people have different problems , we have different . As a matter of fact south korea , japan have way higher suicide rates than India . If your country will progress , you will realize that as well. both of our countries are suffering in different ways . we identify our problem as crappy politicians, and will deal with them in due time at elections and that is our way out. do you have a way out for your problem?

(and yeah if you are a kid you can use words like "incompetent" and else as long as you like, i don't mind ; but if you are not one , which i think as rest of your posts showed maturity, "think before you ink")

Really good analysis :D
Can you also tell us what will happen when "in war situation :D" what will Indians do ??? I am only asking it because you are a Pakistani and who else will know better how to live in e shadow of death :D
Get some life dude. Histroy is proof that wars only did one thing to India - unite it.
your Histroy says otherwise - wars make Pakistan multiply itself with different names.
I know I am off topic but you bring war like situation here. I just extended it where it hurts :D
