Yes, they will be good cops, no doubt about that. The young officers of our Army are its cutting edge. These are the guys who chase without bulletproof jackets and shoot down terrorists in Kupwara, these are the guys who spend nine months in a year with the troops in high altitude posts which are totally cut off in the winters without any outside contact. But these young officers after having served with bravery in some of the most difficult terrains and after having learnt that there is nothing greater than patriotism and camaraderie, will join a force where officers get totally politicised within months of joining. How will they survive the awesome cultural shock? How will they fit into an organisation where pleasing the political masters is primary and everything else is secondary. Even if they adapt, I do not imagine that the IPS lobby will allow them to progress very far up the ranks. They will remain a breed apart, an aberration, unfortunately.
