Three Pakistan nationals, including the driver of a goods train from across the border and his assistant, were among five persons detained at the Attari railway station on Friday after Border Security Force (BSF) men spotted a bag containing drugs and fake currency thrown from the train.The bag contained 10kg heroin and fake Indian currency with a face value of 15.83 lakh.
Those detained by Amritsar (rural) police included train driver Mohammad Afzal, assistant driver Javed Iqbal and Kamran Ashraf. Two Indian customs personnel, who were also on the train, were also detained for questioning.
As per BSF personnel, a black bag was thrown near a bridge after the goods train crossed about two km into the Indian territory.
"When the Pakistani goods train came into Indian territory, mounted BSF jawans were keeping an eye on both sides. Suddenly, one of the BSF jawans saw that a bag was thrown out of the train," BSF DIG Sanjeev Bhanot said.
The jawan informed other BSF men who later came across the fake currency and 10kg heroin, added the DIG.
The BSF officer also stressed that they had informed Amritsar (rural) police and it was up to them now to investigate the matter and decide if the Pakistani nationals were to be detained or not.
Although no formal arrest was made till the filing of this report and no case registered, the goods train that was to return to Pakistan by 5pm was stationed at Attari.
The Customs department too was on its toes and taking the entire matter seriously. Talking to HT, Deputy Commissioner Customs, VK Khosla said, "We have received information and all information conveyed by the BSF is under investigation. This is a serious matter and anyone found guilty will face action."
As for the Pak nationals, the customs officer said, "It is an international matter and we are still not clear if they will be detained or not."
Police, who had detained the Pak nationals in a room, were hesitant to talk on the issue. Since this was the first case in recent years when a bag was thrown from a train, there was not much clarity among customs personnel on the future course of action.
Talks were on at the higher level to discuss the fate of Pak nationals at the time of filing of report.
