What's new

1000 KG Glide Bomb Capable of hitting a target 100 KM away was successfully tested.

Too bad, you folks are going to miss all the fun that comes with imposing a clusterfuck on your enemy using the cluster-bomba.]

Cluster bombs are NOT the issue, stand off dispensers for them are. There was a program to jig the Raptor/MUPSOW from SA with cluster munitions but so far no news of that program has come about. There plenty of cluster weapons with Pakistan, just not the kind that offer the lethality the CBU-105 offers.

Do you have any glide bombs or JDAMs?

I remember reading about Pakistan testing a glide bomb about 7 or 8 years ago....
Welcome to a capability club that has been in South Asia since 2001.

Tactical air support was an after thought that came for the F-16. As such, stand off weaponry was focused on the H-2 and H-4 programs which have been in service since 2004.
India has had glide bombs(as does Pakistan) for a long while now.
The only thing is that DRDO can make their own version now. The costs to manufacture them will be 1/5th them, which means the kit can be fitted on a far greater number of bombs with the same budget.

Im guessing they're talking about kitted bombs, right?

If by JDAM you mean the US GBU-31 variants.. then yes.
If by JDAM you mean any GPS guided munitions including US made and Chinese made and Local variants.. then Yes
If by glide bombs you mean weapons like this, YES.. local derivatives of South African H-2 and H-4 weapons with GPS/IR and manual guidance as well. H-2(not to be confused with the H-2 BVRAAM program) had IOC in 2001 and H-4 joined in 2003.. both got FOC in 2004.

CBU-105 .
Thats what I meant. Pic was of tanks eaten alive by 3 CBU-97's.
Anyway, all that is moot. PAF should have got CBU-105. Seems impossibly ridiculous to not get the 'cans of whup ***', when substitutes aren't there and when there aren't any (apparently) restrictions put in by Uncle. Anyway does PAF have any 'skeet' equivalent or just unguided dumb submunitions.

Not really, the Indian stand off program was a little late as compared to Pakistan... infact some of the panic buying of the Crystal Maze(Popeye derivative) started off only because Pakistan was about to purchase limited medium Air defence systems.

Perhaps they might be aimed for only indigenous weapons.
AFAIK they have entire PGM program including LGB,this 1 tonne glide bomb etc.
In future they will seek for another versions like the @Omega007 mentioned in there

Mate, the kit for converting dumb bombs to glide/smarter ones is called Sudarshan or Sukanya or something like that. Not to mention the imported kits. These have been there for a long while now.

I am not comparing who it first - India or Pakistan. Maybe Pakistan did. That was not the point at all though.

My point was the significance of this news is limited to the fact that a lot more bombs that IAF drops now(after serial production comes online) will be smarter and glide, compared to what we could previously because now it will be substantially cheaper for IAF.

PAF has just the unguided dumb submunitions.

Not at all, If one only looks at the purchase history.. India went straight for the Israeli system post 1999... including both Spice and Popeye Es to build up its stand off inventory. To offsets its inability to attack PAF's Hardened aircraft shelters it has ordered the new NG-LGB systems

Off course it will be, considering that the IAF dished out some hefty amount for the SPICE bombs(which is essentially a mirror of these capabilities).

A few questions please ;

1 Has India got both SPICE and Popeye E Air to surface missiles
I only knew about the Popeye

2 What is NG- LGB systems Are you referring to Indian LGB ie Sudarshan
or some other foreign weapon

Of course. After Indira Gandhi weapons development of India become paralysed.Entire military and its dept was considerably neglected by successive govts.Only exception was IGMDP.But it was a last resort.
But after 1999 .our military and its structure was completely reformed.
Starting from soldiers welfare (ECHS) to state of art tech developemnt.
Perhaps these weapons developement is also part of it.

1. both

2. NG-LGB is an Israeli weapon(not to be confused with Sudarshan). Essentially a penetrator warhead because Sudarshan is incapable of using a penetrator warhead.

DRDO-Developed Glide-Bomb Data

The DRDO-developed 100km-range, 1000kg glide-bomb has been jointly developed with Russia’s JointStockCompany ‘Scientific Production Association Bazalt’ (JSC SPA Bazalt) and its local industrial partner Basant Aerospace Pvt Ltd.

While the DRDO developed the on-board MINGS-based inertial & terminal navigation system, the glide-kits and rear-end structural sections have come from JSC SPA Bazalt.

TRISHUL: Significant Project Milestones Of S-2/ARIHANT SSBN

So was this developed with Russian help? The graphic indicates a range of 60 km, so not sure if this is the same kit.
