10 Epic Military Last Stands

they were supposed to do this as the indians were to treat the prisoners well according to statement of surrender, nothing what you may call great humans, and BTW what else will you call it if not last stand?
Surrender?

The term has also been used to describe the last pitched battle of a war where the position of the defending force is hopeless but the defending force considers it their duty not to surrender until forced to do so

Remember,Battle of Longewala.
:sniper:

btw ..the brigadier was saved by Indian military doctors.... Now this is what we call 'great human beings'...Truly proud of Indian Army...

And it was no last stand...The Pakistani soldiers surrendered..
Never mind what the command said that man stood his ground.... Men like him are seen on both sides.
One quote comes to mind" Lions led by lambs".

Is it true or just another fake story? No disrespect intended but 48 vs thousands is kinda unbelieveable... 48 vs 250-300 is VERY possible.... but thousands? :undecided:

battle of chamkaur : definition of battle of chamkaur and synonym of battle of chamkaur (English)

the Spartan story from the movie 300 comes in mind,

Another great battle was the Battle of Saraighat, where under the abled leadership of Ahom Commander Lachit Borphukon repealed the attacks of the mighty Mughal emperor and resisted them from Entering Assam, and as a result Mughals could never conquer Assam.

Battle of Saraighat was not a last stand.Odds were quite equal for both sides.Ahoms could fight on even if they had lost Saraighat.Lachit never commited his full forces against Mughals,a lesson he learnt at Alaboi. He always kept reserves.

Dai Viet military forces against Mighty Mongol invasion can consider as most epic last stand too, when Euro-China were defeated by Mogol cavary, VN was the last stand to stop Mongol's ambitious :partay:
The third Mongol invasion was also defeated by the Đại Việt forces under the leadership of General, later Prince Trần Hưng Đạo. In 1287 Toghan invaded with 70,000 regular troops, 21,000 tribal auxiliaries from Yunnan and Hainan, a 1,000-man vanguard under Abachi, and 500 ships under the Muslim Omar (tiếng Việt: Ô Mã Nhi) and Chinese Fanji (according to some sources, the Mongol force was composed of 300,000–500,000 men). Kublai sent the veterans such as Arikhgiya, Nasir al-Din and his grandson Esen-Temur. The strategy of this invasion was different: a huge base was to be established just inland from Hải Phòng, and a large-scale naval assault mounted as well as a land attack. Trần Hưng Đạo withdrew from inhabited areas, leaving the Mongols with nothing to conquer. 500 vessels were prepared to bring provisions to Toghan's army. Borrowing a tactic used by general, later Emperor Ngô Quyền in 938 to defeat an invading Chinese fleet, the Đại Việt forces drove iron-tipped stakes into the bed of the Bạch Đằng River, and then, with a small flotilla, lured the Mongol fleet into the river just as the tide was starting to ebb. Trapped or impaled by the iron-tipped stakes (some of which have been recently recovered and now being displayed in a Hanoi museum), the entire Mongol fleet of 400 craft was sunk, captured, or burned by fire arrows. This would later become known as the Battle of Bạch Đằng. Caught between the Champa and Đại Việt, Sogetu lost his life. The Mongol army retreated to China, harassed en-route by Trần Hưng Đạo's troops. The Yuan officers such as Abachi and Fanji died in bloody retreat and Omar was captured.

lol at those bringing the 300 film into this.....

The Battle of Thermopylae, was fought between:
70-300 thousand Persian soldiers
7400 to 7700 Greeks. OF which 300 were spartans.

It was a stand by the Greeks, how-ever the Persians had exhausted their supplies in the area and retreated. Should be noted.

When we talk about epic last stands, we have to mention Dian Wei. When you read about what he accomplished, your jaw drops to the f*ucking floor. A little excerpt of how he fell:

During Cao Cao's stay at Wancheng, he forced Zhang Ji's widow to be a concubine of his, which angered Zhang Xiu. Cao Cao heard of Zhang Xiu's displeasure, and plotted to kill the latter. However, the plan was leaked and Zhang Xiu launched a surprise attack on Cao Cao, leading to the Battle of Wancheng. Cao Cao escaped on horseback. Dian Wei stood guard at the front gate of the camp ground, with a dozen men on his side, and fought fiercely using a long halberd. One swing of the halberd saw more than ten enemy spears broken. As the battle went on, Dian Wei's companions were killed one by one, while Dian was also wounded. Dian Wei then grabbed two enemies and used them as weapons. No other enemy dared to approach him. Dian Wei rushed forward and killed a few more enemies before finally dying of blood loss. He was still staring and swearing as he took his last breath. Only after assuring that he was dead did the enemies dare to come forward and severed his head, which was passed around for all to see. When the word spread, all the enemies came to revere Dian Wei's body, not believing anyone could fight so ferociously.

Talk about a titan.
