The Russian Navy will employ unique testing technologies such as landscape wind tunnel, deep-water and ice pools, in the design of its new generation warships, the Navy’s press spokesman, Captain 1st Rank Igor Dygalo told Sputnik.

“A one-of-a-kind landscape wind tunnel will be used for testing scaled-down models of our new generation ships. Wind tunnel tests allow the designers to determine air current pressure and the future ships’ and port facilities’ ability to withstand various amounts of stress,” Dygalo said.

He added that this would allow timely changes in the ship’s construction and avoid labor-consuming and costly modification made at later stages of construction.

“[The landscape wind tunnel] is the only such unit in Russia, which allows to model the borderline atmosphere while, simultaneously, to test larger-scale models with good maximum attention to detail. This ensures more accurate measurement of wind pressure,” Igor Dygalo explained.

In addition to the wind tunnel, all future models of Russian warships will be tested inside the world’s largest deep-water pool available at the Krylov State Research Center in St. Petersburg.

Russia has been actively upgrading its naval forces with new ships and submarines entering service every year as part of an ongoing effort to increase the country’s naval presence in all strategically important parts of the world.

@vostok, I'm a bit puzzled. Project 22800 appears to have only a pair of AFAR arrays, so that only the forward arc appears covered. What is up with that?

Compared to the model, which does't show rear facing arrarys, these are apparently incorrectly labelled?

Proposed project 20386 does seem to have 4 arrays.

Judging by these photo, there are really only 2 radars.

Odd. The dome atop it is Mineral-ME (which is a surface search radar supporting the anti-ship missiles) or Monumet (which I don't know and cannot find anything on, but it is likely also a surface search radar). So the AFAR arrays are clearly the main air-search sensor, which now appears to have a huge coverage gap over the rear arc. Unless ... the two arrays are somehow integrated with the radar on the Pantsir mount?

If there are any Russian Naval Systems specialists here, then I would like them to comment on this and clarify. Thx.

New corvette for Russian Navy armed with precision weapons to be launched within days - Navy commander (Part 2)
ST. PETERSBURG. June 26 (Interfax-AVN) - The new corvette Gremyashchi, armed with Kalibr cruise missiles, will be launched in Russia within the next few days, Russian Navy Commander Adm. Vladimir Korolyov said.

"Literally within the next few days, the shipbuilding company Severnaya Verf will launch the Gremyashchy, a new project 20385 corvette, armed with precision-guided weapons and engines manufactured in Russia," Korolyov said at a graduation ceremony of the best students of naval educational institutions in the Constantine Palace outside St. Petersburg.

Speaking about the Russian Navy's surface component, Korolyov said "the construction of frigate-class and corvette-class ships will be continued; they enjoy enhanced maneuverability and controllability and are armed with precision missile weapons and new-generation radar systems."

The corvettes of this project are armed with Kalibr cruise missiles.

In keeping with the shipbuilding program, Russia is consistently switching to building warships of larger displacement, he said.

The Russian Navy has commissioned two project 11356 frigates (the Admiral Grigorovich and the Admiral Essen), and the second serial ship, the Admiral Makarov, is undergoing state trials and should be presented to participants in the upcoming International Maritime Defense Show in St. Petersburg, Korolyov said.

"The Navy main command takes a very demanding and meticulous approach to all lead ships of new projects, and we are closely interacting with the industry in this. In the period prior to 2020, we plan the construction of four Project 22350 frigates," he said.

Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport has sold to foreign customers naval equipment worth $24 billion since 2000, company's Director General Alexander Mikheev said Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Rosoboronexport is the single state company exporting military equipment in Russia. Its share in Russia's military exports amounts to 85 percent.

"Naval equipment export has averaged 12 percent of the company’s portfolio over the past several years. This, by the way, is on par with the share of our competitors in the leading states exporting military equipment. Since 2000, we have sold 50-plus naval ships, a third of which are submarines. The naval equipment exported over the period is worth a total of $24 bln," Mikheev was quoted as saying by the company's press service.

The statement is dedicated to Rosoboronexport's participation in the International Maritime Defense Show IMDS-2017. At the event, the company will display the wide range of exported naval equipment including the newly elaborated items as well as the well-known equipment refurbished with better characteristics.

"It is expected that Rosoboronexport's representatives will meet with more than 20 foreign delegations. The show will bring together all Russia’s major naval equipment manufacturers. Also, present at the event will be companies from Belgium, Germany, India, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey," the press service noted.

IMDS-2017 will be held in the Russian city of St. Petersburg from June 28 to July 2. The event's business program will be dedicated to such topics as the implementation of information technologies in shipbuilding, management information systems use in maintenance service, improvement of the rescue resources of the submarine crew and other relevant issues.

Russia's sixth and final Yasen-M class nuclear-powered submarine, the Ulyanovsk, will be laid down on July 28, Navy Commander Adm. Vladimir Korolev said Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The unique architecture of the Yasen-class submarines makes them stand out from anything Russia had before.

A battery of slanted 533 mm torpedo tubes are not located in the immediate bow as in the previous Akula-class subs, but is moved aft, in close vicinity of eight vertical launchers for Kalibr and Oniks cruise missiles.

"On July 28, the multipurpose nuclear submarine Ulyanovsk built on the improved Yasen-M project will be laid at the Sevmash [shipyard]," Korolev told graduates of the Russian Navy educational institutions.

A combination of torpedoes and missiles enables the sub to effectively engage a wide range of targets from submarines and stationary land facilities to all types of surface ships. Before very long, the Yasen submarines will also be armed with heat-seeking torpedoes.

Yasen-class submarines will be the first Russian SSNs/SSGNs equipped with a fourth generation nuclear reactor. The reactor has a 25-30-year core life and will not have to be refueled.

Currently under construction at Sevmash shipyards are Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Arkhangelsk and Perm Yasen-class multirole nuclear submarines.

Russia's Project 955A Borei II-class strategic ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), the Knyaz Vladimir, will be launched in August, Commander-in-Chief of the Navy Adm. Vladimir Korolev said Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Knyaz Vladimir submarine will boost the potential of the nuclear component of the Navy's submarine forces, he said.

"In August of this year, the next Borey project SSBN Knyaz Vladimir, which will enhance the potential of the nuclear component of the Navy's submarine forces, will be launched at the Sevmash enterprise in Severodvinsk," Korolev told graduates of Russian Navy institutions.

He also said that Russia is working on fifth-generation nuclear submarines.

According to him, the Russian navy receives "the newest missile submarine cruisers of the Borey project, which will form the basis of the grouping of the naval Strategic Nuclear forces of the Navy in the near future."

Earlier, deputy commander of the Russian Naval Forces told journalists that the navy is set to receive the Knyaz Vladimir sub in 2018.
