Iran's "Navid" radar was recently showcased during an exhibition visited by Iranian president, Rouhani. The Radar has yet to be unveiled officially so not all specs are known but it is an S-band AESA radar, range speculated to be 400km or more. It is also believed to use Iranian gallium nitride T/R. The radar appears to have characteristics of a counter battery radar and an air defence radar.

It will be used to complement the previous counter battery radar, "Hafez", which was produced few years ago and has a range of 250km (shown below).

This adds Navid to the list of the impressive numbers of Iranian designed radar, alot of which are AESA radars.

I don't think we have any radars with GaN modules, not yet.

Hi,

The reason why it's believed is because in the same exhibition GaN modules were showcased:

Looks like my edited picture from that thread...

We didn't actually find any thing that proved these were GaN. After all they are quite small and we can't see details.

This might be the radar for Bavar-373 air defence system!?

Yes there is no proof for the use of GaN modules.

Don't expect such a S-band radar to use GaNs

If there are GaNs in Iran, then they would need them for the high power X-band illumination radar of the Bavar-373 because GaAs would be too weak for that aperture size.

Hence there are just two indications for GaNs in Iran and just for X-band:
- Bavar-373 illumination radar would be unwisely weak with its given aperture size (a higher power PESA would have been wiser then).

- Those modules on the table, if T/R modules, their size is too small for GaA's --> GaAs have to low power density to pack into new gen compact T/R modules.

These two point stand against the weak history of semi-conductor technology in Iran and that GaNs are very state of the art and new (such a technology jump would be very unusual).

Bavar-373 has numerous radars including AESAs, but Navid isn't it.

Well that's where the doubt comes from, we cannot be sure if they are T/R modules at all. That table has many different components, not just T/R modules.

Can someone please post the AESA radar used with Bavar-373? thanks very much

Yes. Then there is a plausibility question: Shiraz electronics is a company with several solidstate aesa radars. So when they show solid state electronics on the table of which at least one item group are t/r modules, we have to ask what the other items are.

For now we can only confirm GaAs.
