Facebook Inc on Wednesday said government requests for user account data rose 27 per cent in the first half of 2016 compared to the second half of last year.

Google sees increased data requests from Pakistan govt

A similar trend was witnessed in the case of Pakistan where total requests for the period January 2016 to June 2016 was up by more than 200 per cent as compared to the same period last year.

Pakistan’s government made a total of 719 requests and 1,029 account requests in the first quarter of 2016. Facebook produced data in 65 per cent of these cases. Further, for the first time ever, the social networking website provided information on the number of account preservation requests by Pakistan that amounted to a total of 280 cases.

The social networking giant also restricted access to a total of 25 pages for violating local laws.

“Based on legal requests from the Pakistan Telecom Authority, we restricted access to content for allegedly violating local laws prohibiting blasphemy, desecration of the national flag, and condemnation of the country’s independence,” a statement on Facebook’s website read.

Pakistan govt requests for Twitter account removal keep growing

Government requests for account data globally rose to 59,229 from 46,710 and more than half contained a non-disclosure order that prohibited the social networking website from notifying users.

GOP should shutdown FB. FB administration is a bunch of Hypocrites. They banned me for a month for pity reason & i reported a comic posted by an Indian insulting Muhammad SAW(PBUH) nauzubillah. They replied to complain with "This doesn't brake our community guidelines". Fu*k you Mark Suckerburger.

Yeah i've seen pages on Facebook glorifying terrorists like the TTP, I just hope more is done to combat the spread of this cancerous ideology.

The positive here is that Pakistan is starting to monitor social media platforms. This is very much needed.

These videos of sexual violence are leaked online on social media platforms like SnapChat which aren't open like Twitter so monitoring them is essential.

Dumbest reason

Not a big issue like hate speech or Pro-Terrorism but acceptable
The nations and particularly the governments priorities are not in order. Despite a decade of merciless terrorism we have not acknowledged mullahs and taliban as the enemy. Nishan E Haider too is not given to anyone for his role in the war on terror. Zarvali Yousafzai and other fallen soldiers in the war against terrorism are very deserving of the tribute. I don't know why we haven't yet decided that taliban are sworn enemies of Pakistan as a nation.

Youtube is pretty much worse. A tool in the hands of India.

You are free not to use Facebook for whatever reason, but asking the Pakistan to ban the entire social network seem like a gross overreaction.

If you want to see a clear cut example of banning Facebook will do, there is no better example than Pakistan's ban on YouTube over one obnoxious video: if left Pakistan literally in the dark for a long time, while India used it to promote India's brand -- and denigrate Pakistan too. The only way to fight fire, in this case, is with fire. Pakistan will just have to play catch-up.

No it's not.

I do not support banning things. It shows insecurity. There are other ways to beat Islamophobes and India and improve the promotion of our own culture.

Mass communication is about narratives and counter-narratives. Retreat is a bad idea.
Regardless the Youtube ban was a foolish decision by the government, especially based on one video. Video producers lost a lot of money while non-occupational video producers like me could not present the Pakistani perspective. Other than that thousands of documentaries and much knowledge is available on youtube. Without it we are cut off from the world. Banning things is a solution for insecure minds. I wish and pray my country does not take actions like Iran or Saudi. We have to understand how the world works now and promote the power of our culture through modern means available, not banning those very means that are a means of expression/patriotism/empowerment.

I agree with every word. My earlier comment was an affirmation of your point of view.
