Cuba's Fidel Castro, former president, dies aged 90

Globally he is known as a symbol of anti-imperialism. A next door neighbour of the worlds most powerful nation, he did not let his huge neighbour dictate how his country should be run. For that he has earnt the respect of millions, especially in the era of American invasions throughout the globe (Iraq, Vietnam, Afghanistan etc). Personally am not fond of communism, but there is no denying this man believed and fought for ideals he strongly believed in.

I wish him peace in heaven so I will not say anything bad about him, but I despise the communism he represented and defended.

Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Fidel Castro, the socialist Cuban icon who has died aged 90, as the "symbol of an era," the Kremlin said in a statement Saturday.

"The name of this distinguished statesman is rightly considered the symbol of an era in modern world history," Putin said in a telegram to Cuban President Raul Castro cited by the Kremlin. "Fidel Castro was a sincere and reliable friend of Russia."

Putin added that, Castro has managed to build a "free and independent Cuba" that "became an influential member of the international community and served as an inspiration for many countries and peoples."

The Kremlin strongman hailed Castro as a "strong and wise person who always looked to the future with confidence."

"He embodied the high ideals of a politician, a citizen and a patriot sincerely convinced of the rightness of the cause to which he dedicated his whole life," Putin said.

"His memory will forever remain in the hearts of the citizens of Russia."

Putin also said that, Castro had made a "huge personal contribution" in the establishment and development of the countries` bilateral relations.

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev hailed Castro for strengthening his island nation.

President Raul Castro, who took power after his elder brother Fidel was hospitalised in 2006, said that the revolutionary leader`s remains will be cremated early on Saturday.

For China, Fidel Castro has a special position in many peoples' hearts.

In some sense, he is regarded as a brother, a comrade and a friend of Chinese people.

Under his leadership, citizens of Cuba overturned the Batista's government and became the only communist country in Latin America today. Moreover, he led Cuba to become the first Latin American country to establish diplomatic relations with China.

Cuba and China are both communist countries. Not only do they share the same interests in economy and trade, but people in the two countries also have a strong favorable impression of each other.

Most of the old Chinese generations still remember the song, "The beauty of Havana, there is my home…," which was popular during the 1960's in China, when the Chinese were celebrating the success of the Cuban Revolution.
