lets have a discussion on what are the things in our defence establishment that members think negatively affects our forces the most..
for me its the gear our soldiers uses.the situation is improving but not at the pace everyone wants.even after many years of decision making and tenders, still our soldiers uses old rifles without any scopes, patkas, poor bpjs and many other things.

I'll chime in too. I really dislike the current outfitting of Indian infantry. It's underwhelming.

Indian regulars:

But, but... you're a rich country. NATO standards:cry:.

No, shut up. You're not spending enough on your individual troops.

Even our Home Guard, which is the beer league of military units, is better outfitted then your regulars!!!

Knee pads? Sights? NV mounts and goggles? helmets with ear protection? Comms gear? Need to step up the spending guys.

Gear and equipment are horrible - physical condition and overstress is also a problem within the Indian army.

Neither.

I don't like your way of cooking curry, its not the same as how we make curry in the JSDF!

Afterall, after a hard day's work of fighting enemies of the state, the soldier needs the right curry dish to eat!

Bears, err, i mean, soldiers need to eat !

Eat up , soldiers need food for energy ! (btw, just look at the delicious curry sauce on that white rice...oh hawhawhaw!)

 Yeah I heard the Royal Navy got you guys hooked on curry. The IJN had a curry night to reduce instances of Beriberi, does the JMSDF still have that tradition?

hahahahahahahahahaha, well, perhaps not like that, but, LOL!

Just how some aussie navy broad introduce our JMSDF boys to some good ol chewy, tongue licking (good) aussie delights... ha ha ha ;) ;)

Heavy equipment limits your movement, speed, stamina and also can overheat your body. - you guys should've learnt about that in Afghanistan.

Lighter equipment is better in a hot, dry and unconventional situation - where speed and reaction are key factors in deciding the outcome.

I'll be sure to let Forsvarets HQ and ISAF know the next time I see them. In the mean time:

Pretty sure we, the Americans and the rest of ISAF don't care much for your lesson. Maybe work on your stamina and conditioning instead?

I like the Russian military's camo; very practical, effective.

no centralized authority- CDS would help clear up many of the inefficiencies in the procurement and strategic arenas.

unefficiant gear for soldiers- A major issue, in 2016 infantry still look like this:

It is totally unacceptable. The one saving grace is that operational forces/units like RR and Special Forces are given (somewhat) what they need:

tumblr_nofqtlYK0F1tjfjuco1_1280.jpg

overdependence on foreign equippment- this is such a red herring and so far down the list of issues the Indian military faces that it is almost not worth mentioning as of yet. In 10 years time when there are creidble Indian alternatives the situation will be different, until then imports are essential.

delay in almost every defence project- a factor of an inept bureaucracy and impotent/indifferent politcal leadership.

bureaucracy and corruption- the bureaucracy are a MAJOR cause for the inefficiency in the MoD. As for corruption- it is there but almost to a negligable degree, I wouldn't say this was found in India anymore than any other military in the world. But I woudl say the threat/perception of corruption has screwed countless deals in the past decade and led to the absurd practice of cancelling deals unilaterally and blacklisting all and sundry. Thankfully this self-defeating policy has been repelled now.

It is not about absolute budgets but budget/allocation per soldier. The IA may receive a relatively massive absolute budget each year but don't forget this has to be cover over a MILLION soldier's operational expenses (salaries and such) only then whatever capital expenses they can afford with such huge overheads existing. Addtionally, the Indian army is by far the service with the most regressive mindset, they still think that it is larger numbers that will win the game, they still aren't interested in "force multipliers".

The Indian Army's modernisation project is simply nowhere to be seen:

Like mentioned earlier

Assuming cost of equipping each solider with above gear (including maintenance) is approx =$10,000

Total troops numbers
India = 4.7 million = $47 billion = entire India's defence spending per annum currently.
Norway = 71,740 = $717 million

List of countries by number of military and paramilitary personnel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Above gear can be only afforded in the coming decade, if India reaches a $ 5 trillion economy

Indian Armed Forces Comprises of 3 Million in Numbers Which Has Its Toll Modernization is Just Picked in IA In Decade the Picture Will be Changed

Probably its the reason why - a coalition of countries 500k strong couldn't defeat shepherds with Aks - while Pakistan has taken territory the size of Italy from the Talis and sent over 20k of them to hell.

It looks like your Special Forces are badly equipped as well. Poor vests and helmets.

Here are some OLD pictures of SSG.
