The 100 Saudi fighter pilots who participated in Saudi Arabia’s airstrike campaign in Yemen may be rewarded with Bentley luxury cars, according to a now-deleted Tweet by Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal. The statement has been met with derision by Twitter users who dismissed the extravagant gesture in the face of the significant human cost of the Saudi-led Operation Decisive Storm.

“I congratulate our wise leaders on the victory of Operation Decisive Storm and the beginning of Operation Restoring Hope,” bin Talal appeared to tweet Tuesday, following the announcement of a new phase in the Saudi-led campaign in Yemen. “To recognize the one hundred participating Saudi pilots I am pleased to present them with 100 Bentley cars,” he said, based on screenshots of the tweet prior to its deletion.

The stated goal of Saudi Arabia’s nearly month-long campaign in its war-torn, impoverished neighbor may have been the targeting of Shiite Houthi rebels to prevent further advances by the Iranian-allied movement. However, the military operation has been criticized for the heavy civilian casualties that have been sustained through the course of the airstrike campaign. At least 944 people have been killed and 3,487 wounded over the past four weeks of violence in Yemen, the World Health Organization said on Tuesday.

Bin Talal, 60, is the wealthiest member of the Saudi monarchy and among the richest men in the world with a fortune valued at nearly $23 billion, with investments in companies like Citigroup, Apple and Time Warner. The prince is one of the grandsons of Saudi Arabia’s founding rulers, King Abdulaziz, and is the chairman of the Kingdom Holding Company investment firm. This is not the first time the prince has used the promise of luxury cars to reward Saudi citizens. In 2014, bin Talal gifted 25 cars, believed to be Bentleys, to members of a Saudi soccer club after their victory in a league competition.

If this news is true, shame on the Saudi prince. I am glad we did not participate in this bloodshed.

Hi,

If this is true----then this news is totally disgusting----. Fighter pilots are paid to do their jobs that they signed up for---. They get medals for anything extraordinary.

pathetic

Together with perks of-course. In Pakistan we give land that is in no way any cheaper than Bentleys.

Hi,

There is nothing wrong with giving land. That is the traditional way. It is not a matter of being cheaper. You get a medal and that has a grant attached to it----giving bentleys is in no way similar to giving land.

Bentley is for perverse pleasure----it in no way fits the reward for killing your enemy. The profundity of just having the idea of rewarding someone fighting a war with a Bentley is sickening.

You need to cultivate the land, look after it. It feeds your family, provides economic cover to children of martyrs. And when their children die, it will pass on to their children. It is said "zameen maan hoti hai" for a reason, as it will feed you and look after you for generations.
Bentley can do none of that. It's not very good at transporting people either, only two people can sit in it. It just represents the extravaganza prevalent in the Arab world.

My friend you are entitled to your opinion, you are Badshah aadmi, but a simpleton like me fails to understand the difference between a land and a car. Reward is reward, giving land is a traditional way of rewarding troops for this can help them sustain after retirement. However, many many of those who receive a piece of land actually sell it off and invest the money in something else or just use it up. Besides what one can do with piece of desert as reward? It is Saudi Arabia not fertile Punjab where land will yield much sustainability. Moreover, most of those pilots would already be too rich and wont really need something in reward to sustain.

They've got so much money that they don't know where to spend.

Why is it disgusting? Does Pakistan Army not shower massive perks on its officers ?

I assure you that the Indian Army does not give half of what a PA officer gets at the end of their tenure.

To each his own. If KSA can afford it why shouldn't they reward their pilots the best way they can. Your views are not necessarily correct and your judgemental tone is certainly not.

I agree with Syedali's post. There is no difference between land and a car. A reward is a reward. Nothing makes giving land acceptable while a car not. Conversely nothing makes giving a car more acceptable over giving land. Just because it is a 'traditional way' does not make it the only right way.

The burden of proof is on the one claiming things. If you don't have anything to back it up, don't say it.
