Turkish nuclear plant to be built by Franco-Japanese group Anadolu Agency
- Turkey and Japan fornuclear cooperation became law on Thursday.
The agreement, which will permit the building of Turkey's second nuclear plant in cooperation with a Franco-Japanese consortium, has entered into force.
The agreement was published Friday in the official gazette after it was passed by the Turkish parliament’s general assembly on April 1 and approved by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday.
Construction of the $20 billion plant to be built in the northern Turkish province of Sinop, near the Black Sea, is expected to begin in 2017 to produce 40 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity every year with its four reactors.
The nuclear project will be built by a Franco-Japanese consortium with a stake from Turkey’s state-owned energy company EUAS. The agreement between the Turkish and Japanese governments to build the plant was signed in 2013.
