Pakistan elected in UN economic arm with 181 votes
30 October, 2014

NEW YORK: Pakistan was elected on Wednesday to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the economic arm of the United Nations, for a three-year term beginning January 1, 2015.
In the balloting in the 193-member General Assembly, Pakistan received 181 votes. Pakistan was contesting one of three Asian seats, which were unchallenged. The contenders for two other seats – India and Japan – were also elected.
A two-third majority – 124 votes – is required for election. The vote reflects the prestige Pakistan enjoys in the international community. First elected in 1954, Pakistan served the ECOSOC in 1965-1967, 1969-1971, 1974-1977, 1979-1984, 1986-1988, 1990-1992, 1994-1995, 1998-2003, 2005-2007, 2008-10 and 2010-13.
Of the ECOSCO's 54 members, 18 retire each year. Seats have been distributed on geographical basis with 14 allocated to Africa, 11 to Asia, six to East Europe, 10 Latin America and 13 to Western Europe and other states. The ECOSOC, a principal UN organ, coordinates economic, social, and related work of the 14 UN specialised agencies, functional commissions and five regional commissions.
It serves as the central forum for discussing international economic and social issues, and for formulating policy recommendations addressed to Member States and the United Nations system.
ECOSOC is responsible for promoting higher standards of living, full employment, and economic and social progress; identifying solutions to international economic, social and health problems; facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation; and encouraging universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
