China again rejects UN sanctions against Iran

China's ambassador to the United Nations, Zhang Yesui, has said the time is not right to consider more sanctions against Iran.

The UN Security Council, including China, has previously called for Iran to stop enriching uranium and has issued three sets of sanctions.

Iran's leaders insist their atomic programme is only meant for energy-generating purposes.

But the US and its allies fear Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons.

China has the presidency of the UN Security Council during January, and is one of its five permanent veto-holders.

Timing tangle

Mr Zhang told reporters at the UN that "more time and patience" was needed to find a diplomatic solution to the impasse.

The Chinese ambassador's comments come days after after Iran missed an end-of-year deadline set by the US to respond positively to offers of talks about its uranium enrichment programme.

Plans on how to respond are apparently still up in the air, says the BBC's Tom Lane, at the UN in New York.

Diplomats at the UN say senior figures from Europe, the US, Russia and China will meet later this month to exchange opinions, our correspondent says.

US officials have previously called for "crippling" sanctions in the event of a diplomatic failure.

However, recent reports suggest they are currently thinking of "targeted sanctions" that focus on people and companies involved in Iran's nuclear programme, our correspondent adds.

Analysts say it could take Iran from between 18 months and three years to build a nuclear bomb.

With all this in the background, diplomats say it could be many weeks and even months before a deal is reached at the UN, our correspondent reports.

However, it is possible the US and its allies could roll out new sanctions of their own sooner.

sanctions will only create a hostile environment, what U.S should do :
1 .drop double standard nuclear policy 2. talk with other countries with enough respect instead of enough AC .3 take more effort on nuclear disarmament ,if you have over 10000 warheads in your hands and call other countries “axis of evil”,you can't expect they will give up protecting themselves

Well said aim, US needs to get rid of its double standard. US cannot persuade india to sign CTBT, but the same US forces Iran to stop building nuclear projects. China should not support any sanctions or trade embargo against our Iranian brothers.

They did craped the polish and Ukrainian missile defense shield program and the also their inclusion in NATO just to get the Russian support. Now what has uncle sam to offer China to get their support . Coming days will sure test that how Obama Admin will play their cards with the Chinese ....

You just love to include India in every thread :frown:

first, i will appreciate China has shown his teeth against western nexus for a very legitimate issue concerning Asia. I am aware there are many things china will try to cover with this gesture but it fair enough to use your power for your national interests. My respect to china.

Second why Chinese members have dragged India into this thread when so called US double standards for Chinese perceptions are a long list. Why India.
Is china signatory of CTBT? If not then just choose some different example to beat US double standard band. Mind it

China does not fear any evil power.

China herself is a permanent member of the UN security council and as a responsible nation, China knows how to solve nuclear issues.

The Status of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty: Signatories and Ratifiers | Arms Control Association

it seems China always leads India by example. :cheesy:

Yes, China signed it in 1996.

OH, thanks a lot gpit.

As I always say indians know very little about China, they should look beyond their bellywood.

:china: :china: :china:

Sanctions are a dead end. Maybe they "worked" with South Africa, maybe not. Never worked with Iraq. Aren't working with Hamas/Gaza.

Bombing won't "work" either. Just anger the hornet's in the nest. Swarms will go and sting everywhere.

Time to kill the Queen hornet. Regime change. Very, very tricky, but the only way. Need to resurrect Mohammad Mosaddegh. His time has finally come now that the Soviets are kaput and OPEC rules. The CIA can unfreeze his body and Blackwater can re-insert him into Tehran. Watch! This will be the big news in 2010 (but it may unfold a bit differently than with a resurrection....)

China always saves face after been tagged defaulter.

That's the only line i can mention to derail this thread cause Indians were dragged into it.

(Readers please go through that era when china was blamed for nuclear proliferation and how prompt he was to sign). I should have mentioned naked NTP as well.

Chit be meri put bhee meri. lol......
There is no point to tell your moral superfluous ethics that you lead by examples; when we all know rules of the game were made by N5 including china where head and tails either were going to win the game for the same.

Requisite tests were completed horizontal and vertical proliferation was in done in detail. Nuke arsenal was increased 4 times before making rules of the game. If you think you were/are playing game with the spirit of game then we doubt.

As usual a branded rant was launched against India. So as to counter an assertion was made. Thread is not about India....... right. If china is signatory (good for you) as the question was asked even then no Chinese here for this thread are expected to drag India or low level irrelevant comment on bollywood????wtf

Every ones know why china has veto UN sanctions so don't prompt any one to exfoliate this. Being an Indian i know at the end of the day Iran will be beneficiary. This what we want and thanks to China. What china will try to score upon this is our home work/ assignment. So keep that thing apart.

China is not anti-West!

But the fact that the West, with their minions like East Europe, Japan, S. Korea, India, Turkey, Al Qaeda, are doing anti-China things!
