Is Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan better than Lata Mangeshkar?

Nusrat had or never will have no equal. His singing was soul touching, something expected from a Sufi singer.

He was also world renowned and acclaimed, with many fans from celebrity Western circles as well.

Abida parveen is a very distant second in sufi singing now:angel:

I'd emphasise the very distant part. Ironically Nusrat's time had some of the greatest Sufi singer e.g. Sabri brothers, Aziz Mian etc It was just that were around the time of a legend.

It makes me sad to think what Pakistan was and what it became later...

I think this is a meaningless comparison. Both are masters of their respective fields.

NAK was probably the bigger artist, Lata has provided much more happiness to a far larger number of people.

In singing ability they are not equals.

Nobody can copy a single sur by NFAK. He did it so effortlessly that it was mesmerizing.

But Lata Ji has staying power. One just has to respect that. In that nobody is her equal.

Lata Mangeshkar look like moldy cheese and NFAK look like a big ball of ladoo. all in all both where excellent when the spot light was on them.

We were lucky to have listened both of them. Wish we get many like them to compare. Our gains

Please hear songs from the movie Kacche Dhaage you will know if Lata Mangeshkar can sing like/for NFAK. They both are greats in thier own respect. Where as NFAK has only sung in Sufi/Classical style, Lata Mageshkar has far larger reportoire of songs in her career of over 65 years. Singing playback isn't an easy task where the singer has to emote for the actor onscreen as well.
Strangely, I don't see Pakistani prefering Ghulam Ali who is no lesser a legend himself.

Thats because ghulam ali was surpassed by jagjit singh..................nusrat remained unparalleled when he was alive and is peerless even today:coffee:

Western bands still use guitars and other instruments but we seem to have taken a liking to pop only,,,our classical is almost dead
