Chinese President Xi Jinping and his South Korean counterpart Park Geun-hye held talks here Thursday, vowing to enrich the bilateral strategic cooperative partnership.

Xi said China and South Korea are important neighbors, close partners and good friends.

Reviewing all the substantial progress that has been made since they established diplomatic ties more than 20 years ago, the two nations have a lot to summarize, he said.

The two nations respect each other's social system, development mode and core interests, see each other as a development opportunity, support each other's peaceful development and jointly safeguard a peaceful and stable neighboring environment, he said.

China-South Korea relations are facing an opportunity of great development, said Xi, adding that the two sides should share development opportunities, handle the challenges together and deepen their cooperation in a comprehensive manner.

The two sides should become partners that share common development, promote regional peace and Asia's revitalization, and boost world prosperity, he added.

Xi made a four-point proposal to enhance bilateral ties.

Regarding political security cooperation, Xi said he is willing to maintain frequent communication with Park and exchange views on major issues of common concern at any time.

The two sides should strengthen communication and enhance mutual trust through governmental, parliamentary and party-to-party communication and cooperation mechanism, Xi said.

As for economy and trade cooperation, Xi said the two sides should further expand mutual beneficial cooperation in this field.

To raise the bilateral trade volume to 300 billion U.S. dollars by 2015, the two countries should nurture new cooperation growth points in fields such as new energy, telecommunications, intelligent manufacturing, among others, said Xi.

China is willing to launch a RMB clearance service in South Korea and hopes the two sides could speed up negotiations so as to complete their free trade talks before the end of the year.

China, Xi said, welcomes South Korean enterprises to invest more in central and western China.

As to people-to-people exchanges, Xi said both countries will celebrate the Year of Chinese Tourism in South Korea in 2015 and the Year of South Korean Tourism in China in 2016.

To elevate bilateral personnel exchanges to 10 million in 2016, Xi suggested the two sides waive visa for service passport holders and offer visa waivers for short-time travelers between the two sides.

Regarding regional and international cooperation, Xi said China stands ready to strengthen cooperation with South Korea in establishing an Asian infrastructure investment bank and advancing the plan for creating an Asia-Pacific free trade area.

The two countries, he said, could jointly hold memorial activities next year on the occasions of the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Anti-Fascist War, of the victory of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, and of the liberation of the Korean Peninsula from Japan's colonial rule.

For her part, Park extended warm welcome to Xi's visit.

South Korea supports China to comprehensively deepen reform and believe that the Chinese dream could be realized at an early date, she said.

While the Chinese dream and South Korean dream converge, the peace, stability and prosperity of the northeast Asian region will be promoted, said Park.

The South Korean side sincerely hope that the two countries could become strategic cooperative partners who could support and help each other, stands ready to strengthen communication with China in the areas of political affairs, security and military, and is willing to exchange views on major issues in a timely manner, she said.

She expressed her hope that the two countries, with their joint efforts, could accomplish a high-level and comprehensive free trade agreement before the end of this year, so as to provide a fresh institutional framework to enhance the two countries' economic and trade cooperation, advance the two-way investment and financial cooperation and promote regional economic integration.

The bilateral cooperation should also contribute to the region and the world at large, she said, stressing to jointly promote the economic prosperity of the world and deal with challenges, such as climate change.

South Korea supports China to successfully host the informal economic leaders' meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) this year, said Park.

After the summit talks, senior officials from the two countries signed a series of cooperation agreements covering diplomacy, sustainable development, finance, environment protection, local affairs, customs, people-to-people exchanges and media, in the presence of the two heads of state.

The two sides also issued a joint statement.

While meeting the press after the talks, Xi said that a new situation offers a new opportunity for the development of bilateral ties.

China and South Korea will not only seek shared development, but also join hands to cope with global challenges and safeguard the peace and stability in the region and the world at large, Xi said.

"Through this visit, I've got a feeling that China and South Korea have capabilities, conditions and willingness to strengthen their strategic cooperative partnership," he told reporters.

"I have full confidence in the future of China-South Korea relationship and also, I'm very much looking forward to it." he said. "I believe the ties between the two countries will surely continue to forge ahead and achieve new greater development."

Park described her talks with Xi as "candid and friendly." She told reporters that the two sides reached many important consensuses on cooperation in a wide range of areas and signed a series of important deals.

Park said that she believes President Xi's visit will forcefully advance the strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries, and become a "new milestone" in the history of bilateral relations.

Before their talks, a grand welcome ceremony was held at the Blue House for President Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan.

Peng, accompanied by South Korean officials, visited a world cultural heritage site in Seoul, the ancient Changdeokgung Palace, and watched the performance of artists of traditional Korean instrument.

Peng said that the friendship between the two peoples goes back to ancient times and more Korean friends are welcomed to visit China.

The Chinese president arrived here Thursday for a two-day state visit to South Korea, his first trip to the Asian neighbor since he took office last year.

Good.

Let the North know that the world won't tolerate it's brat of a leader.

This is not necessarily anti-DPRK. China serves the right to do business with everybody it wishes, regardless of how they feel about each other. Just as China signs deals with India while having good relationship with Pakistan.

I oppose to portray Chinese actions to be pro or anti since China has non-interference policy. So, the DPRK can be sure that China will not interfere in Korea's domestic issues or foreign policy decision with respect to the DPRK. Nor would Korea let its own affairs be interfered by anybody.

China-DPRK cross-border trade is going on as usual, by the way.

And some issues with diplomatic protocol :)

Who will accompany First Lady Peng Liyuan?

President Xi is accompanied by the first lady Peng Liyuan, a noted Chinese opera and folk singer, but a question of protocol arises as South Korea’s female president Park Jeun-hye is single.

President Park has designated Cho Yoon-sun, the minister for gender equality & family, to stand in for a South Korean First Spouse. The measure was taken as Peng Liyuan has her own schedule apart from President Xi’s itinerary. Cho will accompany China’s first lady on her outings, including visiting in downtown Seoul, and participating in traditional activities, as well as attending a cultural performance.

The two sides have inked 12 cooperation agreements during Xi’s first state visit to Seoul since he assumed office in 2013. Xi was traveling with a star-studded business delegation including Huawei chairman Ren Zhengfei, Baidu chairman Li Yanhong and Alibaba founder Jack Ma.

Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed peace in the Korean peninsula and bilateral ties with his South Korean counterpart Park Geun-hye in Seoul Thursday.

“We hold that the concerns of all sides should be treated in a balanced way, and a synchronized and equivalent method should be sought to bring the nuclear issue on Korean peninsula into a sustainable, irreversible and effective settlement process,” said Xi.

Long-drawn out negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) between China and South Korea would be expedited to conclude this year, said a joint statement after the meeting of the two leaders.

The two sides have set a bilateral trade target of $300 billion by 2015.

China is willing to launch a RMB clearance service in South Korea and would welcome more South Korean investment in central and western China, Xi said.

The Chinese President also discussed advancing the plan for creating an Asia-Pacific free trade area. Beijing is trying to counter US’ progress in forming a Trans-Pacific Partnership that excludes China by an alternate mega Free Trade Agreement in the Asia Pacific.

Officials said earlier this year that China has proposed studying the feasibility of a mammoth free-trade agreement in the Asia-Pacific region in addition to the contesting FTA’s, the US-led TPP and the China-led RCEP.

Meanwhile, Xi and Park also criticized the recent move by the Japanese government to to reinterpret Japan’s strict pacifist constitution to allow its armed forces to fight in defence of an ally outside Japan.

“When the war against Japan was at its highest pitch, the Chinese and Korean people shared their suffering and helped each other with sweat and blood,” Xi said in an address at Seoul National University.

The two countries, he said, could jointly hold memorial activities next year on the occasions of the 70th anniversary of the victory of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, and of the liberation of the Korean Peninsula from Japan’s colonial rule.

“Past experience, if not forgotten, is a guide for the future,” Xi said while meeting with South Korea’s National Assembly Speaker Chung Ui-hwa. “In line with that spirit, the two countries can jointly hold memorial activities next year.”

FTA between SK vs ASEAN effective for several years. Same to Japan,
We called them as AKFTA and AJFTA

Dats riiiiight.

People feel insecure now.

The two sides have set a bilateral trade target of $300 billion by 2015.
This 300 billion is larger than South Korea's trade with Japan and US combined.

Yeah, same goes with CAFTA, which has been in effect since 2002 although, I agree, there is still room for improvement.

What is in line for China, I guess, is China-SK FTA. Beijing also strongly considers the China-EU FTA.

China seems to have a positive image in Korea. I think, if Beijing can sort out the DPRK dilemma in peaceful, satosfactory way, it will have an ally forever grateful. I think, with its military advancements, China will be less and less concerned about the US presence in South Korea even in the case of a unification under the South. On the other, denuclearization/unification will render US presence useless.

Yes, fully agreed. If China and SK are tied together by economies and culture, the US presence will be out sooner or later. China should help Korea peninsula unification, but South Korea is not quite willing to do so, because this could slow their economies down, as they worried. In the end, it's all Korean's own decision and choice, China is there, US is far away, which partner is better for Korea, the answer is very obvious.

You expect too much on a trade agreement. That's economic not political matter.
By signing a FTA, you must give for receive ... not warm or cold but how open your market is for the partner.

I heard from several friends that Vietnames dragon fruit prices have collapsed due to a lack of buyers from China, with some varieties selling for 1/10 last year's price.

True or false?:azn:

PS。Vietnam should urge, indeed demand, the Japs to buy up all the dragon fruits left rotting by the Chinese。

PSS. Retail prices of the fruit in China dropped some 30% against last year's.

Does it relate to the topic ?
I don't know well on growing fruits in Vietnam.
Prices of fruit in Vietnam always cheap, and good flavor.
They always could choose growing what fruit give them the best profit.

As what I observed recently, Vietnam focusing in improve the marketing and maintain the quality of fruit and seafood for longer based on Japan technology. By doing so, their products could reach higher price market than China.
For example litchi ( lychee ), now Vietnam exported to not only China but many other countries.
