Jammu, Oct 30 (PTI) An Indian Air Force chopper today crashed and plunged into Chenab river in Doda district.

Casualties are feared in the mishap, Deputy Commissioner Sharifudeen said.

The IAF chopper, which was on a regular sortie, was flying low over the river Chenab when it got caught in a cable fire of a bridge and crashed into the water reservoir of the Baglihar hydro-electric power project at Tringel in Doda district.

It was returning from Nawapachi area of Kishtawar district.

The exact number on board the chopper is not known as the chopper has sunk in the water body.

A rescue operation has been launched by the army and police, he said.

IAF carries regular sorties to mountain-locked Nawapachi area to transport ration, arms and ammunition for the troops stationed there.

I am just pissed, we are loosing so many fine Service men and women to these crashes.

Planes and choppers can be replaced. Not the people that go down with them.

It Just isn't right. we cant loose people every year like this to Technical difficulties.

enough is enough we need better maintenance on what we have until they can be replaced.

I think he gobot is right because we also have lost too many good officers due to MI-17 crashes here.

May be he spotted something and went in for a closer look

Clearly Pilot error that led to the crash. The copter pilot must constantly be aware of the rotor disc and the tail rotor, especially when hovering.

In a sick way, all these accidents in the Indian Air Force are really separating the average pilots from the brilliant and lucky pilots. Its a kind of trial by fire in a sick sort of way.

Plz don't fully rely on the figures provided on wiki.

As per my rough estimate in the last 5-6 years we have lost around 5+ Mi-17s alone, then how come it has a total of just 7. UN has lost some, India has lost some, Russia must have most many too, so would have the ex-eastern bloc & other Mi-17 users.

In Afghan War alone, Russia lost many Mi-8/Mi-17s.
