Karachi operation: 2 Lyari gang members killed, 100 other suspects arrested
KARACHI: Two members of a Lyari gang were killed while around 100 other suspected criminals were rounded up from different areas of Karachi in the ongoing targeted operations, Express News reported on Sunday.
Weapons and illegal drugs were also seized during these raids which were conducted jointly by Rangers and police officers.
In Lyari, security officers cordoned off the area and started a targeted operation when they were attacked by criminals hiding in nearby houses.
Police retaliated and as a result two of the attackers were killed.

Crackdown brings apparent lull in Karachi violence
Rampant violence has terrorised Karachi, Pakistan's biggest city and economic heartbeat, in recent years, but a recent security crackdown seems to have brought a lull in the bloodshed.
Kidnappings for ransom, sectarian attacks and gang warfare have spiralled since 2008, terrifying the city's 18 million inhabitants and prompting tens of thousands of businessmen to flee to the safety of Punjab province.
The city claimed a grisly record last year as 2,124 people were murdered on its streets, according to the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), the highest number since records began nearly 20 years ago.
"The merciless killings have turned this 'bride of cities' into a city of ghosts and darkness," said Tauseef Ahmed Khan, a political analyst, referring to Karachi's Persian nickname.
But an operation by police and paramilitary government Rangers in the city's tangled maze of teeming streets, launched early September on the orders of the central government, seems to be having some positive effect.
The CPLC said that in September 155 killings were reported -- down from 280 in August. With a total of 2,058 murders up to the end of September 2013 it is on course to beat last year's record, but the crackdown appears to have at least slowed the killings.
Aftab Chunar, the head of the autopsy department of the city's largest state-run Civil Hospital, told AFP that before the operation he was receiving 16 to 18 bodies a day. Now the figure has fallen to three or four.
On the streets, there is relief.
"After a long time there is a feel of normalcy in the city. Now it seems that criminals are on the run and I pray that the good old times return to the city," said Aziz Rana, a 45-year-old bank worker.
Under the military rule of general Pervez Musharraf, the murder rate hit a low of just 76 killings in 2003 before rising to 777 in 2008, when he was ousted.
The figure shot up from 2010 onwards as criminal gangs backed by rival political parties grew in power and sectarian and ethnic violence swelled.
Amir Ahmed Shaikh, until recently the police chief of southern Karachi, the worst affected part of the city, said gangsters backed by political clout had held Karachi to ransom.
Trader flight
Extorion became a hugely lucrative source of earnings for the gangs, with one intelligence official telling AFP around $14 million a month was extorted in Karachi.
Traders and businessmen are the ideal prey for the extortionists, and many have fled the city, which accounts for more than 40 percent of Pakistan's GDP.
"Some 40,000 to 45,000 traders and shopkeepers have migrated from Karachi to the Punjab province as their properties and lives both are not safe and secured here," said Atiq Mir, chairman of Karachi Traders Alliance, a representative body of the city's small to medium traders.
The crackdown has seen Rangers use powerful motorbikes to chase suspects down the narrow, twisting streets which remained off-limits in previous missions using heavy vehicles.
Hundreds of alleged target killers, extortionists and gangsters have been arrested since the start of the operation, Rangers and police say.
Fateh Mohammad Burfat, professor of sociology and criminology at the state-run Karachi University, said the crackdown seemed to be working.
"Peace seems to have returned to the city and the common man, after a long time, has breathed a sigh of relief ever since the operation began," he told AFP.
"It is the neutrality of the operation which is key to its success and so far the police and rangers are executing the operation indiscriminately and with objectivity."
Others are not convinced the lull will last. Making arrests is one thing, but getting convictions in Pakistan's sclerotic legal system is another.
Police say more needs to be done to protect witnesses, currently too scared of reprisals to give evidence.
Tauseef Ahmed Khan, a professor at Federal Urdu University in Karachi and a prominent newspaper columnist, said the real proof of the operation's effectiveness would come with the Islamic holy month of Muharram, due to start in early November.
"It seems artificial to me though there are some vital signs as they have arrested criminals even-handed," professor Tauseef Ahmed Khan said.
"But one would like to see how the month of Muharram passes and it would be a good litmus test of the ongoing operation."
Muharram, which culminates with Ashura, the holiest day in the Shiite Muslim calendar when the faithful march to mourn the seventh-century killing of Imam Hussein, is frequently a flashpoint for sectarian violence.

KARACHI: Rangers personnel on Tuesday arrested 23 suspects during targeted operations in different parts of Karachi whereas police claim to have arrested 97 suspects in the past 24 hours, DawnNews reported.
Operations were conducted in Lyari, Purana Haji Camp, Usmanabad, Bihar Colony, Jamshed Road, Liaquatabad, Pak Colony, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, North Nazimabad and other areas.
According to a Rangers' spokesperson, the arrested suspects were affiliated with political parties and some had links with gang wars. Moreover, sub-machine guns (SMGs), rifles and other weapons were also recovered from the suspects during the raids.
Separately, police personnel captured two suspects near the Super Highway's wholesale vegetable market (sabzi mandi), and also recovered a stolen car from their possession.
Police moreover claimed arresting 97 other suspects in the past 24 hours during targeted operations in different parts of the city. Some of the suspects included wanted criminals.
Meanwhile, a man was killed during firing at Lyari's Ath Chowk. According to police, the killing was of a sectarian nature.
Karachi, the largest metropolitan city of Pakistan, is riddled with targeted killings, gang wars, kidnappings for ransom, extortion and terrorism. Targeted operations led by Rangers forces with the support of police are ongoing in the city under a directive issued by the federal government against criminals already identified by federal, military and civilian agencies.

Rangers ‘raid’ Nine Zero
KARACHI - Panic spread across the metropolis as heavy contingent of rangers cordoned off the MQM’s headquarter Nine Zero on Monday evening.
They made videos through multi storey buildings but no arrest had been made. Heavy contingent of rangers cordoned off the block 8, Azizabad where MQM headquarter has also been located. Rangers removed the barriers of various lanes erected for the security of Nine Zero. Rangers stick down the entry and exit points and visited various organisational departments. Ranger’s spokesperson Major Sibtain while talking to The Nation termed the raid as routine patrolling.
“It was the matter of routine patrolling as rangers doing in other areas and we don’t have intention to raid the Nine Zero,” said spokesperson. “They came to visit for security of Nine Zero and it was a matter of routine patrolling,” said MQM leader Aminul Haq.
Meanwhile, law enforcers claimed to have arrested 218 suspects in targeted operation continued in the City. Rangers claimed to have arrested three political activists during a targeted raid in PIB Colony area of Jamshaid Quarter. The suspects were later shifted to undisclosed location for further interrogation. They were not handed over to the police till the filing of this report. According to sources, the suspects were identified as Ali, Naeem and Arif Mama. They were associated with the MQM’s PIB Colony sector.
Similarly, rangers also conducted targeted raid in Bakra Piri area of Lyari. During the raid, it picked up around half dozen suspects, including three alleged gangsters and shifted them to undisclosed location. Separately, three more criminals were apprehended during a targeted raid conducted by Surjani police in Kaniz Fatima Society. According to police officials, the suspects were involved in a number of cases of street crimes, adding the weapons were also recovered from their possession.
In another raid, around half dozen criminals were also detained from AB Seena Line in Lines Area after an exchange of fire. The encounter took place when the police conducted a raid at a hideout of criminals on a tip-off. The criminals opened fire on the police. Police retaliated and managed to arrest six of them. Police officials also claimed to have recovered a huge cache of weapons and a security guard’s uniform from their hideout. On the other hand, Sindh Rangers has conducted targeted raids in Kalakot, Baghdadi, Chakiwara, Old Haji Camp, Usmanabad, Behar Colony, Yadgar Fish Jamshed Road, Liaquatabad, Pak Colony, Gulshan-e-Ghazi, Shah Latif town, Manghopir, Jacob Lines, Shah Faisal Colony, Model Colony, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, North Nazimabad, Rizvia and Huma Heights areas. Snap checking was also carried out in Kali Pahari area.

KARACHI: Police claimed to have arrested 119 suspects in targeted operation that was conducted in a number of areas of the metropolis during the last 24 hours.
According to the police, firearms and drugs were also seized in the operation.
West Zone police arrested 61 accused including 13 absconders and recovered five pistols, 1 motorbike and drugs.
South Zone police rounded up 12 accused including 7 absconders and recovered four pistols and a cache of drugs.
Meanwhile, East Zone police nabbed 46 accused including 20 absconders from whom 16 pistols, 3 repeaters, 1 shot gun, 1 hand grenade, mobile phone and four motorcycles were recovered.

KARACHI: Eighteen suspects were taken into custody and several types of weapons recovered from them in a targeted operation conducted by the Rangers in various areas of the metropolis.
According to the rangers spokesman, the detainees included Lyari gang warriors while others are affiliated with political parties.
A heavy contingent of Rangers along with the women troops on a tip-off went into action near Ijtama Gah ground in Manghopir area.
Rangers' sources said that the operation was conducted on the information of the presence of terrorists belonging to banned outfits and eleven suspects were apprehended, while 28 weapons of different types were recovered during the operation.
The persons taken into custody belong to gang war and banned outfits, while the two persons allegedly involved in an explosion that had taken place a few days ago were also caught.
It may be recalled that three alleged terrorists riding motorcycles were killed in an explosion a few days ago in the same area.
The rangers spokesman said that they also carried out targeted operation in Khadda Market, Lyari, Madina Town, Landhi, Muhammad Pur, Orangi Town, Safoora Chowrangi, Mehran Town, Korangi and Gulshan e Iqbal areas, arresting seven accused.
