Turkish Naval Programs

Mind this, the submarine is different then other countries. All the countries who have the German version what i called have balance problems like Greece do have. They have added contra weights to solve the problems, so they are heavy and have less more usefull dipslacement. The Turkish version is being solved with stretching the lenght with 3 meter. So our subs have more space with more displacement 2000 ton. More fuell and weapons, and we have our own weapon systems with CMS, so we can modernize the sub when we want and with everything we want. I will have more range and can stay underwater much longer.

So our subs are superior then the downgraded Greece version 😆 .

Not downgraded. Actually we had the first batch of the submarine,we basically tested it and had all these problems. Also don't forget that you started building them some 10 years later. So you got all the improvements implemented in a newer version.

Our Navy managed to overcome all the problems of the submarine, but the whole deal was problematic from the start. The "tilting submarines" was used many times by those who criticized the purchase, the government, the Germans, the shipyards etc.

But after we fixed all the problems and got all of them into service,it proved a very very good submarine. The class is great.

@Abu Shaleh Rumi Yeah,it was a problematic deal.

Among the reported problems with the submarine were excessive propeller cavitation, overheating of the air-independent propulsion system's fuel cells, and excessive rolling in bad weather when surfaced. Seapower magazine reported the Hellenic Navy refused to accept Papanikolis; additional problems noted were inadequate air-independent propulsion system output power, inappropriate periscope vibration, sonar flank array problems and seawater leakage into the ship's hydraulics.[8]

The Hellenic Navy officers in charge of the testing program at the Kiel shipyards in Germany made their case clear in a 2007 investigative journalism program called "Neoi Fakeloi" on Skai TV (Greece). Retired Rear Admiral M. Simionakis, who had been in charge of the Papanikolis program for the navy, told the interviewer that the manufacturer had made two attempts to fix a severe balance problem in the submarine, including shifting 21 tons of material from the top to the bottom, yet the vessel continued to heel as much as 46 degrees in sea trials. Photographic evidence of the severe heeling was presented. In the same TV program, the officer replacing Simionakis in Kiel, Capt. K. Tziotis, listed seven ongoing, serious problems with the vessel, including balance problems when traveling on the surface, problems with the AIP system, problems with the weapon system, problems with the periscope, and problems with flooding.

For its part, TKMS, the German shipbuilder of Type 214, has asserted that it solved all the boat's technical problems in 2006 (before the interviews of the Greek officers mentioned above) and claimed the Greek Navy's continuing complaints about Papanikolis' technical condition are just a ploy to justify a price reduction. Therefore, TKMS refused to deliver the boat to the Greek Navy until all debts were paid and Papanikolis remained in Kiel harbor.[9] Despite this position by TKMS, the Hellenic Navy officers in charge of the submarine delivery have repeatedly stated there are problems with Papanikolis. In October 2008, Papanikolis conducted a new round of trials, which showed that the excessive rolling problem had finally been fixed. The rest of the problems are considered solved.

On 21 September 2009, TKMS announced that the contract with the Greek Navy for all four submarines had been cancelled due to country's arrears of more than 520 million Euros. TKMS began seeking arbitration to resolve the matter.[10][11]

On 27 October 2009, the Greek Ministry of Defence confirmed that they intended to accept the three boats built in Greece.[12] The Greek Papanikolis U214 class is equipped with a hoistable radar mast which does not penetrate the pressure hull of the submarine. In the top of the radar mast the radar transmitter is installed. This transmitter is part of the SPHINX Radar System supplied by Thales Defence Deutschland GmbH in Kiel. The radar sensor is a FMCW transceiver which can't be detected by ESM systems in medium terms. This technology is so called LPI radar, which means "Low probability of intercept". The transmitting power is lower than the power of a mobile phone but the resolution more precise compared to high power Pulse radar. Thales SPHINX radar is a tactical radar, designed for submarines. Greece ordered four submarines and paid the list price of six. (2 bn euros)[13]

Back then, when the whole deal was closed, during that time period the PASOK government was infamous for corruption and bribes. There were many cases of defence companies and foreign corporations bribing ministers and other officials,to close deals. Some of these cases went to court, some probably never did. Bad choices on behalf of the government buying or not buying military equipment, were made.

but the four Istanbul class were planned years ago? or was there some U-turn at some point

its taken 5 years to get 1st one out while Ada Class program took almost 12 years to build 4 warships

hope the remaining Istanbul class dont take this long otherwise we are looking well into 2030 before last one appears

really if they spilt the production between various shipyards and the design is finalised they should get all 3 x Istanbul class launched by 2025

as a matter of fact it took just over 1 year for Pakistani and Ukraine variants from keel to launch so they can do it

we have explained before because of ambargo on subsystems, VLS, 76mm gun and even the SMART-S radar. So they came with CENK AESA radar, it needs time. The first ship of I-class will have ESSM and other will have SIPER and HISAR. The reason why they put ESSM is because of they have accepted the order after years.

The project will end late but it is stronger and almost no foreigner weapons anymore. Every new ship will have ATMACA.

We will have weapons what Western world would never have sold us, and even they have sold expensive. 16 VLS hisar with quad package that is 64 max 80km range missile. If they can make SIPER double pack 32 Hisar and 16 SIPER on a 3000ton ship.

They've got all these engineeers and they couldn't design a diverterless inlet

While it would have been nice, Its not that big of a deal, they went with a traditional layout for simplicity, KF-21 designers did something similar. I think they are just trying to get a basic model ready, and then they will further improve with next gen models.

Yeah I figured as much. Very important to get this thing flying before the elections.

For a few years now, Baykar has been carrying the AKP. It is instrumental in the "Turkey 2023 Superpower" bullshit narrative.

DSI is not required for this platform given its flight regime for the initial version .... eg JF17 added it later.

He is anti-Erdogan ,, therefore attack BAYKAR to defame KIZILELMA project

CHP supporters said KIZILELMA is a toy even can not flight ... mentally ill people

Meanwhile, some people here totally ignore the fact that Baykar,Erdogan and his son are involved in crazy financial scandals and corruption. But "Erdogan make Turkiye superpower,so strong..."

Erdogan discovers massive gas fields, the second biggest rare earth deposit in the world, oil in the mediterranean..I'm telling you,a month before elections he'll discover the fountain of youth somewhere in Anatolia.
