They are created when state enables monopolies. This inherently creates social and political imbalance.

All the excuses, Billionaires are not created just because they prayed to god to become a billionaire. All the billionaires became rich by creating wealth, jobs and economic activity. It’s funny to see people saying only 1% of Indians benefit from IT industry, how many of BDeshis benefit from IT? Not even 0.1% I guess. India’s domestic car sales are 3 million cars a year which are manufactured in India, millions are directly and indirectly involved in this industry, how many do BDeshis employ in automobiles? If textiles could make Bangladesh richer than India then why is it so that Bangladesh’s domestic textile market itself is 12% smaller than India even on a per capita basis, 12% difference is no joke. All these made up figures can’t help you in real life.

In case of Rana Plaza - The building owner is not the same as the factory owners.

The factory owners had leased the building, so they couldn't know what kind of sub-standard material was used to construct the building.

Loblaw, which was one of the international company these factories were supplying to, had no requirement to conduct audit of the building's structural integrity either. For which the case against Loblaw and social auditing company Bureau Veritas was dismissed in Canadian court, as they owed no duty of care to the victims.

It was a tragedy, and the primary culprit is the building owner, who also happened to have powerful political connection. His goons played a part in forcing people to get back to work inside the building after cracks developed a day before the collapse.

To get back to your initial point-
You cannot operate a sweatshop and supply to large global brands. Period.

If you doubt that, then the large global companies are as much accountable for negligent audit process as the Bangladeshi factory operators.

Many low-income countries, including Bangladesh, Venezuela, and Angola have failed to diversify their knowhow and face low growth prospects. Others like India, Turkey, and Malaysia have successfully added productive capabilities to enter new sectors and will drive growth over the coming years.

As you show we are doing better in nominal GDP. That is the international measure, not PPP. As to the latter it is only a matter of time.

You can point to GSP as much as you want. You could have chosen to be an LDC which is what you are. When the designation was set in the 70s any country with over 60m population had a choice to self designate themselves as LDC or DC. India chose the latter and suffered the consequences.

BD specialised in RMG as that is where our competitive advantage lay for exports. It is also import substituting and developing an economic base and diversifying its exports. BD productive capacity is showing up in its GDP figures. Exports only consititutes about 20% of the economy. 80% of its economy is growing because of its economic engine. Your conclusion run contrary to facts.

And then Indians judging BD for lacking cars - another example of their superficial values. Happy to watch their countrymen starve but show off in a nice car.

BD policy and society is a compassionate one. Every Bangladeshi understands that more cars are no good for society and you will never see a complaint.

This is exactly why I come to this section again & again. Where else can we find such creative excuses for backwardness.

Having more cares have everything to do with showing off- it has nothing to do with income levels or having a sizeable middle class. Obviously.

Guess why Bangladesh have a far lower number of trucks per capita as well? That's because Bangladesh is a compassionate society which understands that shipping stuff on trucks does no good, when poor people exist in Bangladesh.

Those billionaires are nothing to be proud of, they're the symptom of a cruel, greedy society - and you know it.

We aren't exactly talking about folks who make your women do slave labour in unsafe sweatshops here.

Senapathy "Kris" Gopalakrishnan is an Indian billionaire from the state of Kerala & one of the co-founders of Infosys.

Today his company employs 270,000 & has a 20,000 seater campus in his home state. Obviously nothing to be proud of here.

It's your ilk who is ashamed of reality of your supposed "Asian tiger economy". I have seen the most creative excuses for Bangladesh's extremely low consumption figures, which contradict the supposed "economic development''

Bangladesh has low number of personal vehicles (cars, motorcycles) because Bangladeshis prefer eco-friendly modes of transport.

Bangladesh has lower sales of smartphones per capita, as Bangladeshis prefer to smuggle them in.

Bangladesh has much lower per capita electricity consumption because it's industries are more efficient.

Bangladesh has lower consumption of primary energy per capita, as motor vehicles in Bangladesh are more efficient.

There are zillion such excuses, all to hide the fact that the reality is quite different from whatever your statistical bureau publishes.

Your examples relates to capital intensive investments. None of these runs contrary to reality as you seem to think.

BD has a huge population and have not invested in infastructure because it did not have the money.

However that does not mean as an agriculture based economy it has not improved and achieved self sufficiency and is not a top ten global producers of many produce . It does not mean it has not exported huge amount of manpower globally. It does not mean it has not developed industry that negates the need for imports.

You need to delve deeper... you perceptions are based on very shallow criteria.

Even the much hyped textile industry in Bangladesh employs just 4.4mn people compared to the 45 million in India, 10.23 times more for a population 8.3 times big.
