South Africa’s High Commissioner Methuthuzeli Madikiza has said that his country considers Pakistan an important market for trade cooperation and is keen to further enhance the volume of bilateral trade.

The high commissioner expressed these views during his visit to the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) on Thursday. He was accompanied by Deputy head of Mission and Political Consular Christo Janse Van Noordwyk. RCCI President Muhammad Nasir Mirza, Senior Vice President Usman Ashraf, Vice President Shahraiz A Malik and members of the executive committee were also present on the occasion.

The high commissioner said that Pakistan is the 14th biggest exporter to South Africa, which calls for the need to further strengthen trade relations between the two countries. He said that the volume of bilateral trade could increase to $1 billion in the next few years if cooperation and joint ventures can be initiated in including tourism, agriculture, services and pharmaceutical sectors.

The high commissioner offered RCCI to organise its annual achievements awards in Cape Town and also accepted the invitation to participate in Build Expo 2021 being organized by the chamber.

Earlier, Nasir Mirza briefed the high commissioner about the ongoing activities and future programmes of the chamber. He said that the chamber has successfully conducted the trade forum with African countries through a virtual platform despite the coronavirus pandemic.

In order to increase trade with South Africa, trade related information should be shared and exchanged at the delegation level, he suggested.

Education? SA has good universities! instead of focusing on North America or Europe where its bleeding expensive to go and study.

Very good universities for sure.

Here is my concern - on Education because I am deeply embedded with 3 institutions.

#1 - We were giving away scholarship programs to deserving Pak students in area of mining and geology amongst others.
#2- It is shocking that entire army personnel are here for these studies.

This is clearly stealing away from deserved students who should be valued for their input in giving back to their country. For example, my colleague, he brought in one doctorate student from Pak - she was amazing student - finished her doctorate in symmetry and immediately was given a teaching position in China as my friend is a well known academic in this field with long term working relationship in China.

As long as there is no nepotism or army officers hijacking these positions from deserved students, i am for it.
Yes, absolutely there is a huge win win for both countries. however i feel outside of talk nothing much transpires. There needs to be a very good push from Pak to showcase where there are opportunities e.g. mining sector. Another huge win is in GTL or CTL process which we are the world's leader.

Another is in the agriculture and food processing sector where there is huge learnings Pak farmers can directly benefit e.g. citrus oils etc.

Right now, the biggest challenge where Pak makes bad news locally is :
1. Illegal immigrants - we must have over 400k plus
2. Cement dumping.

yes, in the intelligence - there is a name for them 'Paks'. some are really bad news; they are engaged in many illicit activities; we had a case in neighbouring town - they ganged up on a poor Pak fellow - their own friend, had him murdered because of shop he had bought for his business.
