Musharraf said he would resign if the opposition parties tried to impeach him after next month’s elections.

Musharraf’s remarks came as police tried to identify a suicide bomber who blew himself up in Lahore on Thursday, killing 24 people and adding to pressure on the former general as he struggles to stay in office eight years after seizing power in military coup.

Musharraf is also under gathering domestic political pressure.

The party of slain opposition leader Benazir Bhutto and the other main opposition grouping are predicted to make gains in the Feb 18 polls. They have vowed to oust Musharraf if they emerge as winners. Musharraf is seen as vulnerable to impeachment over his decision to fire Supreme Court judges and suspend the Constitution last year.

“If that (impeachment) happens, let me assure that I’d be leaving office before they would do anything. If they won with this kind of majority and they formed a government that had the intention of doing this, I wouldn’t like to stick around,” he said. “I would like to quit the scene.”

Thursday’s blast targeting police officers outside the High Court in the eastern city of Lahore was the latest in a series of bloody attacks in the country.

At least 20 suicide bombers have struck in the past three months, killing 400 people, many of them from the security forces -- the most intense period of terror strikes here since Pakistan allied with the US in its war against Al Qaeda and other extremist groups in 2001.—Agencies

Now that he has become president for a second term, I would like him to complete his tenure.

It would be a favour and not a threat to pakistan if the guy left.

Geez the media... It was said in a lighter vein...

The statistics as they stand out today are that Q-League and PPP would emerge out in a tie. with around 100 seats each.

About 50 each would be shared MQM and PML-N.

The next big contender would be the MMA and the other small parties.

No party is coming out with a clear majority to pull off anything like this...

Even if MMA, PML-N and PPP combine together, Q-league and PML-N might edge out slightly ahead due to their alliances with smaller parties.

As i said you will Regret the day he left. Write it down.

People are crying now that Y Musharaf is here, but if Ganja party caomes into power they will do the same loot the country, then i will ask you, who is the batter choice.

MUSHARAF MAY NOT BE THE BEST, BUT WE DONT HAVE BATTER THEN HIM.

I agree. If he leaves we would see the same corrupt politicians in power again. If he should be removed I say we need new people to fill his place. I for one am tried of seeing the same old people in politics, its time for new people, but still President Musharraf needs to stay.

Said it before but Musharraf is the strongman that Pakistan needs.

Without him the nation would be driven to the likes of mr 10% or an Iranian style theocracy.

Give the guy a chance to build the foundations like those of Turkey by Ataturk.

Musharraf should continue. He's the best hope there is for pakistan and i just wish if both PML(N) and PPP gets the defeat of their life time.
