What's new

Egypt is officially the first customer of the Russian fighter Su-35 in the Middle East and Africa

Egypt is a rich country..It was mismanaged before... and its military was saving money for almost 30 years..So even if they have saved just $1 billion a year..you can do the math.. it is at least $30 billion saved.. Just $10 billion was spent so far..A lot is still to come..
And you were doing so well until you wrote egypt is a rich country. But I agree like all muslims countries it is mismanaged

Egypt is putting a lot of money into buying stuff. From where they are getting it?

Egypt is poor country

The US gave over $83 billion military aid to Egypt as part of the US brokered Camp David peace agreement between Egypt and Israel in 1978

In 2019 alone, Egypt was allocated $1.3 billion in US military aid

Egypt is oldest civilization in the world. Egypt earns a lot just from tourism alone. Also, KSA gives Egypt billions to buy military hardware.

Check post #11 now..

CAATSA does not apply to Egypt in this instance.. first the deal was signed with Russia before the CAATSA and second Egypt asked the US for the F-35..Trump promised it but it did not go through Congress..it was refused..

Egypt is geopolitically important to the US. The US would never dare sanction Egypt because that means Egypt will never buy anything from the US ever again and the US can't afford that.

S400 deal between Turkey and Russia was signed before CATSA too so it will be interesting to see US reaction
Regarding F-35 I doubt that such thing happened but who knows maybe Egypt intentionally asked for them knowing that they will get NO from americans and used this as justification for su-35 deal with Russia
last time when US threatened protests “erupted” in September 2019

More Russian junks!!! Haven't they learnt how PAF and TurAF shoot down the Russian jets left and right???

Not only that.. The security of Usrael is paramount to the US policy in the ME.. it needs that stability..

Is that why Turkey wants it too? lol

The S-400 deal of Turkey is related to to NATO and has nothing to do with CAATSA..

Well NATO has said multiple times in the past that Turkey’s purchase has nothing to do with them
It’s all about american whining with their stupid fake reason-endangering F-35’s stealth hence why there’s only CATSA sanctions threat from Congress
If you think americans are going to let Egypt without pressure/some sanctions just because the deal has been done before CATSA then you are naive of how US works
Egypt doesn’t have some cards in its pocket to make some kind of bargaining... as I said it’s going to be interesting the next 6 months as 2 su-35 are going to be handed over to EAF by the end of 2020

1 Rafale
2 F-16
3 Mirage-2000
4 MiG-29
5 Rafale
6 Su-35 (if the deal is made)

Honorary mention

7 Mirage-V
@The SC why is Egypt following the Qatar approach? If Egypt is being bankrolled to buy all this military hardware...why doesn't Egypt stick with 1 to 2...or max 3 proven and tested platforms.

For example F15/F16 combo is good...if too much reliance on one country is the problem then F16 and EFT would be a good option. This way at least the cost can be more spread out over greater number of fighter jets acquired instead of a squadron or two of every available jet on the market. It would also simplify so much of the logistics...spares and maintenance.

This is not even considering the better approach of spending all this money...which is to make indigenous efforts. All these rich Arab countries throw away billions in purchases...u guys could team up and try making it urself...to keep all the money from flowing out. Start small like developing munitions and avionics...and build from there.

Since you don't seem to know much about the ME.. let's start by saying .. there is no comparison between The ancient warrior nation Egypt and a 40 year old 250 000 population Qatar.._that is one neighbourhood in Cairo the capital of Egypt_.. And even then..the latter is getting Western weapons..F-15s, Typhoons and Rafale..easilly..

The core of your misunderstanding..is that the US won't sell the F-15 to Egypt because of Usrael security.. and even the F-16s they sold Egypt are not in par with the Usraeli ones.. hence the need to diversify to try and get what is missing and create an equilibrium with Usrael..

There are at least 2 squadrons of each new Aircrafts.. like the Rafale with an option for 12 more and probably 24 more..The MIG-35s are 50 and all indicators say there will be more, most likely another 50.. the SU-35 are almost 30 which is a good number even very good when you talk about heavy strikers.. most likely will get more or the SU57 in the near future.. The Typhoon will mostly complement the Rafale in very high and high altitudes where it excels.. while the Rafale is extremely good in the low and very low Altitude.. so no need for too many of them.. 46 will be enough with 48 or more Rafale..

All Arab nations have already started making their own weapons.. they will start coordinating much more when they all reach a certain level..because it is not equal right now, some are much more advanced than others..

As for maintenance ..the thing is that modern aircraft maintenance is mostly computerised so it is much easier that what it was before..

Egypt has more cards than Turkey.. you are just ignorant of the facts..
The US stopped the delivery of the F-35 and kicked out Turkey from its production..So it is mostly related to endangering the F-35.. The US knows better because all the F-35s' data is sent to an air force base in US..!!!!!!!!
On the other hand This procurement of Egypt does not pose any danger to the US national security and that matters a lot in the difference between the two cases..

In my post I never said that they(Qatar and Egypt) are equal or similar. In fact I said that Egypt can do better than to follow Qatar's tactics(in terms of defence purchases). U r just finding a reason(that's not there) to vent against Qatar...and I don't want any part of that...so don't put words in my mouth.

Qatar is rich but has a tiny population and hence it relies on protection of other powerful countries. By throwing money at France(Rafale), at Britain/Germany(EFT), at US(F15), etc. Egypt is entirely different and can be a powerhouse in its own right(which is why I'm wondering as to why they don't follow a path that's better in the long run for Egypt's defence needs).
And even then..the latter is getting Western weapons..F-15s, Typhoons and Rafale..easilly...

If US isn't selling...or selling watered down stuff...why does Egypt continue buying? If we take what u said at face value then it is even dumber for Egypt to continue purchasing defense equipment from US. Just recently Egypt went ahead with a deal worth a billion USD to upgrade it's AH64 attack helicopters...if US is selling less than ideal stuff...then why shouldn't that billion go to purchase more Ka52? And just phase out AH64 over time.
There are at least 2 squadrons of each new Aircrafts
Okay...and what exactly is the point? The need is for much higher numbers than just a couple of squadrons...and like I said if Egypt settled on two to three platforms...the cost per aircraft would be lower.
like the Rafale with an option for 12 more and probably 24 more..The MIG-35s are 50 and all indicators say there will be more, most likely another 50.. the SU-35 are almost 30 which is a good number even very good when you talk about heavy strikers.. most likely will get more or the SU57 in the near future..
That's just speculation...in any case to have Su35 and Rafale...while also considering EFT...u don't see the senseless diversification?
The Typhoon will mostly complement the Rafale in very high and high altitudes where it excels.. while the Rafale is extremely good in the low and very low Altitude.. so no need for too many of them.. 46 will be enough with 48 or more Rafale..
That's not the role of Typhoon and Rafale...they are not meant to compliment each other. In fact Rafale was the result of France going its own way and not sticking with EFT with other European nations. Both are twin engine delta canards. They have their differences in performance(one being a close coupled canard while the other is not) but in general...all the things one can do with Rafale...can be done with EFT...and vice versa. In short...it would be better to stick with either one or the other...the justification u r giving isn't exactly sound.
All Arab nations have already started making their own weapons.. they will start coordinating much more when they all reach a certain level..because it is not equal right now, some are much more advanced than others.
That's good...a step in the right direction.
As for maintenance ..the thing is that modern aircraft maintenance is mostly computerised so it is much easier that what it was before..
Again that justification isn't exactly sound. It would ALWAYS be cheaper and simpler maintenance and logistics wise...to operate 1 to 2 types of aircrafts in more numbers...than smaller numbers of 4 to 5 different aircrafts.

Nice, would like to see Egyptian AF in good shape and trying new things.

I doubt US will sell them F15 or F35.

That's not the point I was making.

I wasn't involved in your debate just saying they needed potent 4th gen fighters with modern tech and thus Rafale and Su35 suit them. Egypt is not a rich country , it gets help from allies to fund these purchases but they do build a lot of their military equipment. Fighter jet program is not possible for them without large funding and cooperation with US, EU, Russia or China.

Saudis/Gulf Arabs on other hand need equipment more urgently and only recently started putting emphasis on local industry, they will need more time before we start seeing extordinary progress.
