LAHORE, Pakistan, Dec 3 (Reuters) Pakistan's Election Commission Monday barred former prime minister and opposition leader Nawaz Sharif from a January 8 general election because of past criminal convictions. “His nomination papers are rejected because of his convictions,” presiding election official Raja Qamaruzaman told Reuters in Lahore. then why isnt he in jail?

Is this a legal loophole?

If someone is convicted (which NS was) and then pardoned (which he also was), then the conviction still stands as a proof of that individuals guilt - it is just that the punishment was pardoned.

The plot thickens!

Ok the verdict says "Past criminal convictions". I missed the past.

I hope the greedy guy doesn't pull his entire party out on a technicality. He can still be party president and not be elected.

Sort of call the shots from the background like Sonia Gandhi.

But how does BB fare in all of this? Was she never convicted? I know she was in one instance, but then it was overturned on appeal - but was that it?

Could the Swiss work on their case post haste please!

The Spaniards have already dropped their oil for food scam investigation involving BB (as expected) ostensibly under US pressure (again as expected) - hope the Swiss remain more "independent and neutral".

Heard the difference between Nawaz and Bibi case are, Nawaz never pursue his cases in court till the final judgement. But on the other hand Bibi was persistently and consistently follow here case in the court and challenge the verdict against her.

Come back Lota's come back!!!

NS is disqualified!

US Ambassador called on NS and askd him take back his decision of boycott.
but if hez been declared not eligible by EC than election larae na larae sanu ke farak painda j.

I don't have much info on the embezzlement cases Nawaz was involved in. Are there any credible internet sites highlighting the information?

I think the difference is that he has been pardoned for cases before 1999.

BB didn't have new cases against her after 1999.

Come back Lota's come back!!!

NS is disqualified!

Wouldn't that make room for Benazir government.. IMO Benzair should be disqualified as well. I hope that happens in the end.

Webby,

NS and Shahbaz not being able to run only benefits the PML-Q. The people who are going to vote for the PPP will do so with or without NS or the PML-N. With NS running, the PML vote would have been split, and indeed some PML-Q people were switching loyalties keeping in mind the NS "star power". SO now that PML vote will go primarily to the PML-Q - which will weaken BB's power in the NA.

If you look at the details of BB's manifesto, this is a huge setback for her. NS would have gone along with her to concentrate a lot of presidential powers into the office of the PM, just to reduce Musharrafls influence. The PML-Q has already come out strongly against the changes she wants to bring about.

ISLAMABAD: Leaders of different political parties including Nawaz Sharif, Ms Benazir Bhutto and Chaudhry Shujaat called on the visiting Turkish President, Abdullah Gul, here on Monday.

“A strong and stable Pakistan is essential for Muslim Ummah…Turkey wants stable democracy in Pakistan,” Abdullah Gul said to the leaders.

He said he never interferes in the internal affairs of a country, however, he pointed out that participation of all the political parties in the upcoming general elections is necessary to carry on the democratic process.

Abdullah Gul said his party chairman, Tayyab Erdegon was declared ineligible to participate in the elections in 2002 in Turkey but his party went ahead with taking part in polls and clinched victory.

He stressed upon the unity of Muslim Ummah to face the present day challenges.

Caretaker Prime Minister, Muhamamdmian Soomro, former prime ministers, Benazir Bhutto, Nawaz Sharif, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, MMA Chief, Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Secretary MMA, Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman, Chief Tehreek-i-Insaaf, Imran Khan and others called on the visiting Turkish President, Abdullah Gul.

The difference being that the Turkish political parties are not parties based on one individual.

Did you hear that Lahori and Interceptor!

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been barred from standing in 8 January parliamentary elections.

A rival candidate had complained to the Election Commission, citing criminal convictions against Mr Sharif. The commission upheld the complaint.

Mr Sharif returned from exile last month. He was overthrown in a 1999 military coup led by the then head of the army, Gen Pervez Musharraf.

President Musharraf resigned from his army post last week.

He was sworn in for a second term as president, this time as a civilian, on Thursday.

Selective amnesty

Mr Sharif has until Friday to appeal against the ban.

"His nomination papers are rejected because of his convictions," election officer Raja Qamaruzaman told the Reuters news agency in the eastern city of Lahore.

Mr Sharif said he found the decision "very surprising" and would tell other opposition parties they should join him in opposing the vote.

"We should now be fighting the dictatorship with more vigour and more determination."

Mr Sharif has said his party plans to boycott the vote, although he filed his nomination papers before making a final decision.

President Musharraf signed into law an amnesty earlier this year that cleared former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto from corruption charges facing her.

At the time he and Ms Bhutto were engaged in power-sharing talks. The amnesty was a major factor in her decision to return from self-imposed exile.

However the terms of the amnesty did not clear Mr Sharif.

He was found guilty of hijacking and terrorism after ordering in 1999 that the plane carrying Gen Musharraf back to Pakistan be stopped from landing.

The move led to Gen Musharraf staging the coup.

Mr Sharif went into exile the next year.

Boycott differences

Mr Sharif and Ms Bhutto are meeting to discuss a possible joint boycott of January's elections.

Mr Musharraf says he will lift emergency rule, imposed one month ago, on 16 December.

Mr Sharif has called for a boycott, but Ms Bhutto has indicated that a boycott would play into Mr Musharraf's hands.

Mr Sharif's brother, Shahbaz, has already been banned from the January elections. He had also applied to stand for a Lahore constituency.

AsSalam oAlaikum folks
If I am not mistaken, BB was granted immunity from prosecution by Presidential ordinance. If she can contest polls on account of this and Ganja(Former) and Co are being halted, it seems onesided and unfair. In order to have a level playing field, everyone should be treated the same way
