Obama's pitch: Fix Kashmir for UN Security Council seat

For Pakistan.. Yes.. For rest of the world, I am not so sure...

Fortunately, Pakistan has little if any say in this
The rest of the world does not care, but it makes sense to all. There's a difference in those two things.

I'm not saying the world is a nice place all of a sudden, but if it were - there is no way they would allow India the UNSC seat. It just makes no sense to do so.

Truth be told till Kashmir issue is pending, anyone dealing with India's UNSC seat honestly would have to put that first.
India can simply keep voting in its own favor, keep vetoing and what not. It makes no sense to give India that power.

There is more to the world than just the Kashmir issue. India can contribute to those causes in a productive way. Why can't you guys think beyond Kashmir? There are number of other issues in the world: problems with hunger and poverty, civil wars in Africa, millions of children dying with malnutrition... isn't it time for India as a growing economy to be able to help resolve some of the these issues working with the rest of the world?

Perhaps not. Quoting from UN Charter:

Decisions of the Security Council on all other matters shall be made by an affirmative vote of nine members including the concurring votes of the permanent members; provided that, in decisions under Chapter VI, and under paragraph 3 of Article 52, a party to a dispute shall abstain from voting. [Chapter VI/ Article 27/ Para 3]

Kashmir issue is under Chapter VI.

Seriously, sometimes I wonder despite being an Indian why India is after UNSC seat since UN has no more imp role to play. Also, these UN things are used to put sanctions to countries which have good relations with India such as Syria, Iran, Iraq(under Saddam Hussein) etc and even if India gets UNSC seat it would put India into a difficult position in order to appease European and American countries and go ahead sanctioning friendly countries.
+1,000,000,000,000

Except for bragging rights, it serves no purpose.

How can you argue from their perspective... From your perspective you may think so... It is for them to decide who to bring into the UNSC, some country which has some form of influence over the decisions that are going to affect the rest of the world. India being a growing economy makes a good and strong case to be elected into the UNSC.

That way none of the countries in the UNSC have a clean record or present situation

1. USA - Afghanistan
2. China - Tibet and bunch of other areas
3. Russia - Chechen
4. UK - Almost screwed up economy
5. France - .....

Any way, how many things in international politics make sense these days??

UN in general UNSC in particular is doomed if it does not update itself from the WWII era world view to current day world. So, UNSC would be doing itself a service with its expansion. India may have to engage in aggressive diplomatic posturing but we do not have to make a territorial compromise for the sake of UNSC seat.

Funny how indians so badly want a UN Security Council seat, but they chose to ignore the UN resolution on Kashmir.

A country that has disputes with almost all of its neighbours (Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, and Nepal), its ridiculous to allow a country like that a UNSC seat.

For a person from a country widely recognised worldwide as"root of terrorism", this sort of speech is, as you said, RIDICULOUS.

From a country proclaims secularism and believes in fascism such sort of speech is expected.

Life is full of contradictions.. Just like 90% of Pakistanis hate USA, but still expect it help them in the flood crisis and continue with the financial and military aid..

Or how USA is the largest stockpiler of nuclear arms but still talks about nuclear disarmament

or how Pakistan despite being a dictatorship for 30 out of 60 years of existence and still being in a situation with military not in civilian govt's control, talks about how Indian democracy doesnt work

So if you are looking for funny, you can find a bunch of such stuff locally within Pakistan without having to venture into India and its policies...

Obama is looking after his own American interests. Its not that he "hates India", which is a silly way of looking at things.

It needs India to contain China and Pakistan to contain India.

Although the suggestion that any hint of US involvement will solve Kashmir is laughable. There will be politcal firestorm both in India and Pakistan if it is known that the deal being worked out has American pressure of some sort. It wont work period.

spot on. this is just a ploy for a triangle containment in south asia where everyone contains the other and the US sits around and counts the money. the US does not give a s* about kashmir, it has never cared about anything unless it can 1.) contain a rival country that the US is paranoid about, 2.) it has natural resources.

kashmir is an issue for india, pakistan and china to solve, and us 3 alone. why would the US, which has no land claims, no sea claims, and no major power presence within 1000 km of kashmir, care, unless there was some secret motive?
